A successful spray application doesn't only depend on the choice of the appropriate chemical product and on the treatment period, but also depends on the user's abilities and the working order of the crop sprayer. The experience shows that these two points often pose a problem. Concerning the equipment, many countries have taken initiatives for the sprayers control. This one is usually free but the tendance is to make it obligatory. The control method implemented in Belgium (Wallon region) is different from the general method based on the use of a spray pattern collector: it is completely mobile and is essentially based on the measure of the pressure at the boom and of the nozzles output. The results show that many sprayers are not in a good working order. [less ▲]

Some of the sprayers that have been manufactured over the past few years are fitted with electronic flow control systems. The purpose of these devices is to adjust the flow rate to changes in the working speed or in the recommended spray volume. The first part of the study compares these electronic systems with one conventional hydraulic flow control (fow metering device) on the basis of their response time to variations in working speed. The study also compares the response time of two current types of electronic flow control systems at various boom widths (controlled by shutting off or opening parts of the boom) or to deliberate changes in the spray volume. Response times are also converted into equivalent treated areas. [less ▲]

The volume distribution of spray below individual agricultural flat-fan spray nozzles was fitted to a truncated normal distribution. This expresses the parameters as a function of the spray liquid pressure, the boom height and the nozzle orifice size. This model was used to predict the transverse distribution below an agricultural spray boom. [less ▲]

Sprayer control is essential for optimal application of diverse agrochemicals. Optimal application ensures respect for the environment. For the first time, electronic measurement devices have been used to improve sprayer control speed and precision. A chain of measurement devices permits monitoring and recording of information while the sprayer is in motion. This chain is composed of the following components: electromagnetic flowmeter – pressure transducer – impulse wheel, amplifier, transmitter-receiver, recorder and computer. This device is able to control many processes. It allows the continuous recording of instantaneous data flow-pressure-speed, observation of regulation system and punctual fault detection. Control duration is short, especially considering the amount of collected informations. After processing, information about each apparatus can be conveniently stored in a central file. [less ▲]

The reduction of volumes spread over an hectare, which is the most significant trend in field spraying practice, requires a more accurate control of the homogeneity of volume distribution under the spraying boom. This homogeneity admits two components, a longitudinal and a transversal one, the former being ensured by the recent developments of electronical equipment controlling the flow according to the speed of advancement. The transversal component is linked to the distribution of each isolated nozzle on the boom and depends on parameters such as nozzle spacing and spraying height and pressure, whose values are fixed by the users. A possible approach for optimizing the values given to those parameters consists in establishing a model of the distribution of an isolated nozzle, taking into account nozzle calibre, spraying pressure and boom height. This individual model can then be used to predict the transversal repartition under a boom and improve it by varying the spraying parameters and nozzle spacing on the boom. [less ▲]
