Phylloporia rzedowskii and Phylloporia ulloai , both collected in tropical forests of the Sierra of the Huasteca Potosina, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, are described as new species. The main critical morphological features that characterize them are the pileus shape, the pore diameter, the basidiospores shape and size, and, possibly, their ecology, such as the host relationships (specificity/preference). Both species also form distinct clades in phylogenetic analysis based on partial DNA sequences data from the nuclear ribosomal LSU. An identification key for 10 species reported from the Americas is proposed. [less ▲]

Hence, the new combination Perenniporiella tepeitensis is proposed. Th species is redescribed on the basis of the type specimen and several original collection from eastern Mexico and USA, a key to perenniporiella is proposed. [less ▲]

Perenniporiella chaquenia sp. nov. is described from Argentina. New records of P. pendula and P. micropora are discussed. A key to Perenniporiella species is presented. Preliminary phylogenetic relationships of Perenniporiella are inferred from parsimony and Bayesian analysis of a combined set of DNA sequence data (nuclear ribosomal partial LSU and ITS). It demonstrated that Perenniporiella forms a well resolved monophyletic clade distantly related to Perenniporia s.s. It also clearly showed that within Perenniporia as usually conceived other morphologically homogeneous group of taxa, such as the P. ochroleuca or P. vicina alliances, form well resolved clades, which could be recognized as distinct genera. The differentiation of the hyphal system and the basidiospores morphology are outlined as critical features for the definition of genera in the Perenniporia complex. [less ▲]

The status of the F. punctata complex in tropical/subtropical America, and more specifically in Cuba and the surrounding area, was partially assessed. Fomitiporia langloisii, Fomitiporia dryophila and Fomitiporia maxonii, three names long considered taxonomic synonyms of F. punctata, are recognized as representing three distinct species that are distinguished from the latter on the basis of morphological, molecular and ecological (biogeographical) data. The three species are described again and their preliminary phylogenetic relationships within Fomitiporia are discussed. Fomitiporia tabaquilio comb. nov. is proposed. The status of Fomitiporia in America and its present circumscription are discussed. [less ▲]

Phellinus caribaeo-quercicolus sp. nov. is described from several collections made in western Cuba, so far exclusively on Quercus cubana. The species is characterized by a perennial, resupinate basidiomes, cushion-shaped to nodulose and multi-layered when old, apically hooked to hamate hymenial setae, and ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, thin- to thick-walled, hyaline to faintly yellowish basidiospores, 4.5-5.5 x 3.5-4.5 microm. The species is compared to other Phellinus species with hooked setae, especially Phellinus undulatus, also recorded in Cuba. The preliminary phylogenetic relationships of Ph. caribaeo-quercicolus within the poroid Hymenochaetales complex of genera is presented and discussed here. [less ▲]

Fomitiporia tenuis sp. nov. and Fomitiporia aethiopica sp. nov. from the Ethiopian highlands are described. Both are characterized by a resupinate habit, globose, dextrinoid basidiospores, cystidioles, and respectively scarcity or absence of hymenial setae. Fomitiporia pseudopunctata and F. robusta are reported also in the same area. The preliminary phylogenetic relationships of F. tenuis, F. aethiopica and F. pseudopunctata are inferred from parsimony analysis based on partial nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU). A preliminary key to the poroid Hymenochaetales with dextrinoid basidiospores (Fomitiporia, Phellinus s.l., Pseudoinonotus) is proposed. [less ▲]

Fishes of the tribe Carapini (Encheliophis and Carapus) share a noteworthy peculiarity: they shelter in holothurian echinoderms or bivalve hosts. Some species are considered parasitic, others commensal. This study focuses on the phylogeny of the tribe, using two other Carapidae species as an outgroup (Snyderidia canina and Onuxodon fowleri). Insofar as possible, the selected anatomical and behavioural characters where chosen in an ecomorphological perspective, as features that could be responses to various lifestyle-related constraints. Our character selection also took into account the fact that some features are (presumably) linked. Such features were grouped together as a single trait to avoid their overvaluation. This methodology enabled us to separate commensals from parasites, the former belonging to Carapus and the latter to Encheliophis. Carapus species reflect in their morphology the constraints imposed by a diet of hard, mobile, elusive prey, showing predator-type features: a strong dentition, a wide mouth opening, a robust food intake apparatus. On the other hand, the endoparasitic Encheliophis species show a generally weaker buccal apparatus and narrow mouth opening, in relation to the different constraints of their lifestyle where the diet constraints are less pronounced: they eat body parts of their host. We propose changes in both generic diagnoses and transfer three species from Encheliophis to Carapus. [less ▲]

A previous study of the effect of zinc deprivation on Mycobacterium bovis BCG pointed out the potential importance of an alcohol dehydrogenase for maintaining the hydrophobic character of the cell envelope. In this report, the effect of the overexpression of the M. bovis BCG alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in Mycobacterium smegmatis and M. bovis BCG is described. The purification of the enzyme was performed to apparent homogeneity from overexpressing M. bovis BCG cells and its kinetic parameters were determined. The enzyme showed a strong preference for both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes while the corresponding alcohols were processed 100-1000-fold less efficiently. The best kcat/Km values were found with benzaldehyde > 3-methoxybenzaldehyde > octanal > coniferaldehyde. A phylogenetic analysis clearly revealed that the M. bovis BCG ADH together with the ADHs from Bacillus subtilis and Helicobacter pylori formed a sister group of the class C medium-chain alcohol dehydrogenases, the plant cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenases (CADs). Comparison of the kinetic properties of our ADH with some related class C enzymes indicated that the mycobacterial enzyme substrate profile resembled that of the CADs involved in plant defence rather than those implicated in lignification. A possible role for the M. bovis BCG ADH in the biosynthesis of the lipids composing the mycobacterial cell envelope is proposed. [less ▲]

In the framework of a study of wood-inhabiting fungi on Laing Island, a small coral island located on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, we have established a phenological table of the 96 taxa of encountered Basidiomycetes. Within six species presenting large phenological amplitude, two groups can be distinguished. On the one hand a group of species (Hexagonia tenuis, Polyporus philippinensis and Microporus xanthopus) with narrow ecological amplitude restricted to dense vegetation cover and thus growing in an environment buffered against desiccation and on the other hand a group of species (Pycnoporus sanguineus, Schizophyllum commune and Trametes scabrosa) with a very large ecological amplitude very resistant to desiccation. Furthermore, a large number of species are found too sporadically in order to draw some conclusions concerning their phenology. [less ▲]

The growth of three wood inhabiting basidiomycetes (Microporus xanthopus, Pycnoporus sanguineus and Schizophyllum commune) isolated from a tropical coastal forest of Papua New Guinea is characterized in relation to temperature and NaCl salinity. P. sanguineus and M. xanthopus present a very similar response to NaCl salinity, but P. sanguineus has a wider tolerance for temperature variations. S. commune withstands wide temperature variations, but it is the only one to present a marked salt resistance. This correlates with its abundance along the sea. The presence of P. sanguineus in the same habitat is rather unexpected since it is very sensitive to NaCl salinity. Its high growth rate probably allows it to take advantage of periods of high rains that limit salt accumulation. [less ▲]
