Humans kept ornamental fish in their homes from ancient times. During time, the ornamental fish industry became a profitable enterprise. Color, size and shape are important traits when we describe a fish as a phenotypically uniform line, strain or breed; a standardized color, shape and size describe better a fish population and thus it is promoted better on the market. Several varieties of fish are being artificially colored to improve marketability. Painted, dyed or tattooed fish are terms for a new variety of pet fish whose scales have been transformed from monochrome silver into vivid pigmentations using artificial colors or lasers. These practices produce many health problems for fish. We should not to put money above the life and welfare of any living thing. Education of the customers is a very important thing, because artificially colored fish continue to exist because of demand. [less ▲]

Il s'est cependant maintenu modestement dans quelques régions aux sols plus pauvres et au climat plus rigoureux que ceux qui conviennent le mieux au froment. Les aspects "santé" prenant de plus en plus d'importance dans les pays riches, la bonne réputation de l'épeautre en ce domaine a permis un récent regain d'intérêt pour cette culture, dont les prix se sont envolés au cours de l'année 2014. Cette évolution est-elle durable ou ne sera-t-elle qu'un feu de paille ? [less ▲]

This study has in view to investigate grossly the Romanian rabbit market as starting point for a future deeper and larger economic approach of the Romanian rabbit market as part of the European market. In Romania, the rabbit meat is expensive (4.48-9.01 Euro perkg), and this is due to its lownumber of consumers. The local rabbit production in Romania is supported only by small farms, and these are not competitive. Rabbit meat imported from Spain is con siderably cheaper than the one local produced. The profitable rabbit farming in Romania is oriented to brood-stock production and pet animalsproduction. Such animals, sold as pure breeds, bring considerable income: 33.81-100.00 Euro per adult animal, depending on breed, variety, size, age, and pedigree. However, Romania has some geo-pedo-climatic advantages which could help the farmers to expand their activity also to meat production and export, and make it more profitable. [less ▲]

Transylvanian Giant Rabbit is a highly polyphyletic breed and has its origins in many distinct populations of rabbits: the common Romanian rabbit, the Grey Giant, the Giant Papillon and the Californian. It was created and consolidated by Petrescu-Mag et al (2009, 2014). This paper is a French version of the official standard for the judgement of the exhibition Transylvanian Giant Rabbit (Petrescu-Mag et al 2012). We respected the general rules presented by European Association of Poultry Pigeon and Rabbit Breeders (2010) and fit them to the specific characteristics of our breed. [less ▲]

In order to implement the new Common Agricultural Policy agreed upon in 2013. the Walloon government had to make some choices, left to the Member States or the regions within them, which is the case in Belgium. In July 2014, it was decided to implement the green payment (which is compulsory) proportionally to the basic payments), the payment for young farmers (compulsory) at a high level (1.8% of the total envelope for direct payments), an additional payment for the first 30 hectares (payment which is left to the choice of the Member State/region), coupled payments (as much as 21.3 % of the total amount of direct payments), and the basic payment (compulsory, representing 29.9 % of the total regional envelope for direct payments only in Wallonia). The paper examines and argues why environmental issues are matters of security, offering conceptual clarifications upon "environmental security". The range of issues considered as "environmental security" subjects are numerous and diverse and one of these is related to food. Food production, storage, distribution and quality have always been linked to environ mental conditions. Food security through organic agriculture contributes to environ mental security. Scientists often point to three factors as responsible for environ mental state - population, technology, and consumption, but consumption seems to get the least attention. We studiad consumer behaviour as source of positive and negative consequences with impact on environmental security. The study case presents the results of a survey targeted on organic food consumers from NW Romania. We found that 73% of subjects believe that organic food helps protecting the environ ment more than conventional food and 60% believe that animal organic food comes from animais that had better life (than conventional ones). We found a statistically significant difference between people who believe humanity faces natural environ ment problems which are very threatening and those who do not concerning the strength of beliefs that organic food helps protecting the environment more than conventional food (p<O.05). We observed a direct, strong relationship between the strength of beliefs that organic food has capacity to preserve existence of traditional products and strength of beliefs that organic food has the capacity to protect natural environ ment [r=.506, p=.OOO]. The paper defends the idea that consumers' beliefs such as those related to nature protection or animal welfare through organic food are valuable instruments that help to strengthen the environ mental security. Survey on cereal resources in Wallonia according to their different uses. Survey on cereal resources in Wallonia according to their different uses. More than 60% of the arable cropped area in Wallonia is dedicated to cereals. Cereal chains were initially aimed at ensuring food security but are now progressively oriented towards new non-food uses. Walloon cereal chains are now having to face up to new global challenges: to ensure the competitiveness and sustainability of vegetal and animal chains, to match society's expectations and to meet the biomass needs for energy uses and bio-based products. Within this framework, this research aims to evaluate the environmental and socio-economic sustainability of future scenarios of current and potential food and non-food uses for Walloon cereals. This paper, the first in a series of two, presents the current picture of Walloon cereal crops and their uses. Various steps are analyzed: production, collection, wholesale and processing. Four main uses characterize cereal processing: the so-called "4Fs", representing Food (human food uses), Feed (animal feed uses), Fuel (energy uses) and Fiber (material uses). Data collected from stakeholders in the Walloon cereal chain enabled us to assess cereal flows for the "4Fs", drawing a qualitative and a quantitative picture of Walloon cereal resources including the key elements of the cereal chains. This approach serves as a basis for a prospective exercise, described in a companion paper, which develops potential uses for Walloon cereal resources at the 2030 horizon. [less ▲]

En Wallonie, région située au Sud de la Belgique, les capitaux mobilisés pour l’activité agricole sont nombreux, variés mais surtout importants. Parmi les capitaux engagés, le capital foncier est l’une des composantes importantes du patrimoine de l’exploitation agricole. Ce dernier influence directement les décisions qui sont prises à long terme en son sein à savoir, sa politique d’investissement mais également les éléments relatifs à son cycle d’exploitation et à sa trésorerie. La problématique foncière ne doit donc pas être analysée de manière cloisonnée mais doit rester intégrée à la question centrale du financement des exploitations agricoles de manière générale et de la reprise des activités en particulier. Le présent article a pour but de caractériser le capital foncier en Wallonie. Après un descriptif succinct de l’agriculture wallonne, l’importance des capitaux mobilisés pour l’activité agricole en Wallonie par les principaux acteurs du monde agricole est décrite par le biais d’une approche micro-économique basée sur les données du réseau comptable organisé et géré par la Direction de l’Analyse Economique Agricole (DAEA). La deuxième partie, quant à elle, discute de la capitalisation des aides issues de la politique agricole commune (PAC) actuelle mais également future dans le foncier en Wallonie. L’approche est de type théorique et utilise les données de la littérature mais également celles du Système Intégré de Gestion et de Contrôle (SIGEC) de la Direction générale de l’Agriculture, des Ressources naturelles et de l’Environnement (DGARNE) du Service public de Wallonie (SPW), qui a en charge l’octroi des aides à l’agriculture. Parallèlement à l'extension de l'agriculture, l'élevage s'est développé pour la fourniture de produits alimentaires (lait, viande) et non alimentaires (cuir, laine) mais également par l'apport de la traction animale aux agriculteurs et la restitution d'éléments fertilisants. Ceci a notamment contribué, dans nos régions, au développement du système à jachère et culture attelée. Au cours des dernières décennies, l'agriculture s'est fortement intensifiée grâce à l'énergie fossile utilisée pour la production d'intrants, de concentrés, la mécanisation et le transport des produits alimentaires. Cette intensification de l'agriculture au niveau mondial a conduit à la spécialisation des exploitations avec une dissociation de l'élevage et de la culture en bassins de production avec des conséquences très dommageables sur l'environnement. De nos jours, les productions bovines représentent 54 % des principales orientations technico-économiques en Wallonie, selon la nouvelle classification européenne (OTEX). L'élevage bovin en production est composé de 500 601 têtes : 41 % de laitières et 59 % d'allaitantes. Il est fortement basé sur la valorisation des prairies permanentes qui occupent plus de 45 % de la surface agricole utile et concerne plus de 86 % des exploitations agricoles wallonnes sur les 13 301 recensées en 2012.Toutefois, l'élevage est de plus en plus critiqué par la société à cause de ses impacts négatifs sur l'environnement et de considérations liées au bien-être animal.De plus, dans certaines exploitations, mise en concurrence des zones de grandes cultures avec les zones herbagères pour la production de lait et viande, difficultés et contraintes du métier d'éleveur. L'arrêt de cette activité pose la question du devenir de la surface agricole qui lui était allouée. Dans ce contexte, il paraît important de passer ici en revue les principaux services liés à l'élevage de ruminants en Wallonie afin d'identifier par la suite les conditions qui permettent l'optimisation de ces derniers tout en limitant les nuisances connexes et ceci dans le but d'objectiver la situation. Coffee is the main source of income for a large number of households and provides major foreign currencies for the national economy. Although it covers only 6.3% of cultivated areas, coffee is produced by 500,000 households in Rwanda. Since its introduction in the country in 1904, coffee has always been operated by individual producers. However, after the liberalization of the coffee sector in 1998, the quantity and quality produced are steadily decreasing which affects the price and the income of coffee growers. To search for a solution, the Rwandan government has striven to consolidate coffee growing cooperatives in different parts of the country by building coffee washing stations (CWS). These stations were mainly meant to help coffee growing cooperatives produce high quality coffee which is competitive on the international markets. The goal is to produce a fully washed coffee, exportable and better valued on the international market, which can provide better income for peasant producers. Coffee washing stations are then seen as tools to produce quality coffee and are mainly run by cooperatives, which are structural elements in the rural world. Through these facilities and structures put in place, jobs are created for coffee producers, loans are granted, farmers are motivated due to the increase of income, the market is guaranteed and the prices become attractive for the members. Thus, the socio-economic welfare of coffee growers is improved, which reduces poverty among coffee growers’ households. This study focuses on the analysis of the role resulting from the structuring action of the peasants through CWS and coffee cooperative KOPAKAMA Rutsiro District, Western Province of Rwanda on the socio-economic development and technical assistance of members and the surrounding world.
