[more ▼] Coffee is the main source of income for a large number of households and provides major foreign currencies for the national economy. Although it covers only 6.3% of cultivated areas, coffee is produced by 500,000 households in Rwanda. Since its introduction in the country in 1904, coffee has always been operated by individual producers. However, after the liberalization of the coffee sector in 1998, the quantity and quality produced are steadily decreasing which affects the price and the income of coffee growers. To search for a solution, the Rwandan government has striven to consolidate coffee growing cooperatives in different parts of the country by building coffee washing stations (CWS). These stations were mainly meant to help coffee growing cooperatives produce high quality coffee which is competitive on the international markets. The goal is to produce a fully washed coffee, exportable and better valued on the international market, which can provide better income for peasant producers. Coffee washing stations are then seen as tools to produce quality coffee and are mainly run by cooperatives, which are structural elements in the rural world. Through these facilities and structures put in place, jobs are created for coffee producers, loans are granted, farmers are motivated due to the increase of income, the market is guaranteed and the prices become attractive for the members. Thus, the socio-economic welfare of coffee growers is improved, which reduces poverty among coffee growers’ households. This study focuses on the analysis of the role resulting from the structuring action of the peasants through CWS and coffee cooperative KOPAKAMA Rutsiro District, Western Province of Rwanda on the socio-economic development and technical assistance of members and the surrounding world. Confrontés à un contexte changeant, de plus en plus concurrentiel, les agriculteurs sont face à des choix stratégiques difficiles en vue d’optimiser l’efficience de leur exploitation. Pour y parvenir, ils doivent mener une réflexion globale de leur mode de production et intégrer tous les aspects assurant la durabilité de leur exploitation. Pour les aider dans cette démarche, une analyse de la durabilité de 90 exploitations « 100% Lait » (>95% de vaches laitières et pas de culture de rente) a été réalisée dans le cadre de DuraLait et de DuraLait Plus. Ces études sont subsidiées par la DGARNE, Direction de la Qualité. Les piliers économique et social de la durabilité ont été plus particulièrement étudiés dans ces projets. L’organisation du travail a été spécifiquement traitée car elle constitue un enjeu essentiel pour l’avenir de l’agriculture. En effet, les agriculteurs souhaitent soulager la pénibilité de leur travail. Dans un contexte économique difficile, cette dimension est essentielle pour envisager le maintien de l’agriculture dans notre région. However, organic farming is practiced since many years and has registered a significant development during the last years, reaching 7% of the number of farmers in Wallonia (South of Belgium) and 7% of the Walloon agricultural area. Presently, the Walloon Minister for Agriculture strongly supports this sector and has proposed a strategic development plan of organic farming, the target being to reach 14% of the Walloon agricultural area in 2020. This paper presents and discusses the situation of organic farming in Wallonia and the main features and challenges of the new strategic development plan. At the same time, natural resources are becoming scarce and climatic changes influence more and more the conditions of vegetal and animal production. During the last decades, agricultural production methods have used large quantities of inputs like pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Enough food was produced for the world population, but some environmental problems appeared. In the near future, a new equilibrium will have to be found between agriculture, environment and land management. Mais la PAC se trouve aussi à la veille d'un nouveau tournant à partir de 2014, avec une Union européenne passée de six à vingt-huit membres. Dans le même temps, notre planète a enregistré, depuis les années 60, une véritable explosion démographique et un développement économique sans précédent. De plus, la population mondiale, qui vient de franchir le cap des sept milliards, devrait dépasser les neuf milliards d'individus en 2050. De nombreuses questions se posent alors face aux incertitudes de l'avenir : l'agriculture pourra-t-elle subvenir aux besoins alimentaires d'une population toujours croissante ? Quels seront les modèles d'agriculture les mieux adaptés ? Est-il judicieux de poursuivre, voir de développer la production d'agro-carburant à partir de céréales ? ... Les nouveaux défis lancés à l'agriculture peuvent paraître insurmontables. Mais, de fait, que s'est-il produit dans le passé récent ? Comment ont évolué les "performances" du secteur agricole ? L'agriculture a-t-elle déjà fait face à des défis majeurs ? Pour répondre, au moins partiellement, à ces questions, il est apparu intéressant de prendre un peu de recul et d'analyser l'évolution au cours des dernières années de la production et des échanges mondiaux d'un produit agricole qui reste stratégique : le blé. Les lignes qui suivent présentent donc rapidement les chiffres clés relatifs à l'évolution du blé au niveau mondial, au cours du dernier demi-siècle.
