The effect of manipulation and distracting noise on immediate serial recall was measured in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), neurologically healthy elderly individuals and young adults. In experiment 1, the authors compared serial word recall with word recall in alphabetical order. Alphabetical recall requires the active manipulation of the contents of working memory. Findings indicated that DAT patients were severely impaired in the alphabetical recall task, whereas the performance of neurologically healthy elderly participants was comparable with the performance of young adult participants. In experiment 2, the authors investigated the effect of different irrelevant auditory backgrounds on immediate digit recall. In this task, both elderly participants and DAT patients performed similarly to the group of young adult participants, indicating comparable efficacy to resist auditory distraction. [less ▲]

Most previous PET studies investigating the central executive (CE) component of working memory found activation in the prefrontal cortex. However, the tasks used did not always permit to distinguish precisely the functions of the CE from the storage function of the slave systems. The aim of the present study was to isolate brain areas that subserve manipulation of information by the CE when the influence of storage function was removed. A PET activation study was performed with four cognitive tasks, crossing conditions of temporary storage and manipulation of information. The manipulation of information induced an activation in the right (BA 10/46) and left (BA 9/6) middle frontal gyrus and in the left parietal area (BA7). The interaction between the storage and manipulation conditions did not reveal any significant changes in activation. These results are in agreement with the hypothesis that CE functions are distributed between anterior and posterior brain areas, but could also reflect a simultaneous involvement of controlled (frontal) and automatic (parietal) attentional systems. In the other hand, the absence of interaction between the storage and manipulation conditions demonstrates that the CE is not necessarily related to the presence of a memory load. [less ▲]

The phonological loop and central executive components of working memory were examined in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD patients) and elderly controls. Patients with Alzheimer's disease showed reduced verbal spans, with smaller phonological similarity and word length effects. They also showed a decreased performance in tasks examining processing speed and articulation rate. However, phonological analysis was normal. With regard to the central executive, AD patients showed deficits in an alphabetical span task in which subjects were asked to recall a random series of words in their alphabetical order, while they performed normally on a dual task in which they had to perform simultaneously a digit repetition and a visuomotor task. These results suggests that Alzheimer's disease may affect several components of working memory but all aspects of the central executive mechanism are not necessarily affected. [less ▲]
