The effects of weight loss on hormonal and biochemical blood parameters were measured monthly [carnitine, creatinine, urea, free T4 (fT4), total T4 (TT4), plasma alkaline phosphatases (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), potassium and total proteins] or bimonthly [cholesterol, triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), glucose, insulin] in eight obese Beagles dogs fed either a high protein dry diet, DP (crude protein 47.5%, on dry matter basis) or a commercial high fibre diet, HF (crude protein 23.8%, crude fibre 23.3%). The dogs were allotted to two groups according to sex and body weight (BW) and they were respectively fed with the DP or the control HF diet during 12-26 weeks, until they reach their optimal BW. The plasma basal triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations were decreased by the two diets but the difference was only significant for the DP diet. The plasma mean NEFA concentration increased regularly over the period with the HF diet, without significant difference between the two diets. No effect of diet or weight loss was observed on plasma carnitine, urea, creatinine, ALP, AST, ALT, potassium, TT4, FT4, IGF-I, glucose and insulin. Weight loss induced a decrease in fT4 plasma concentration (p < 0.001). The high protein diet allowed a safe weight loss. [less ▲]

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of three fibres (sugar-beet fibre, guar gum and inulin) incorporated in the basal diet of healthy dogs at 7 per cent of dry matter (DM). Parameters examined included stool output, water consumption, nutrient digestibility and fasting and postprandial plasma metabolites. All fibres increased wet faecal output; an increase in faecal DM output being observed with sugar-beet fibre only. Sugar-beet fibre and inulin increased daily water consumption. Sugar-beet fibre and guar gum decreased DM digestibility. The three fibres diminished organic matter and crude protein digestibility while ether extract digestibility was decreased by guar gum and inulin. Guar gum induced lower postprandial insulin, alpha-amino-nitrogen and urea plasma concentrations. Guar gum also lowered fasting cholesterolaemia. Sugar-beet fibre and inulin showed no metabolic effects. These physiological properties suggest that guar gum would be a suitable ingredient for dietary therapy of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or hyperlipidaemia in the dog. [less ▲]

Cette étude relate les effets de la distribution de deux rations enrichies en pulpes de betterave ou de chicorée (7 p.100 ADF dans la matière sèche) en comparaison à une ration témoin sur les paramètres fécaux, la digestibilité des principaux nutriments et plusieurs paramètres biochimiques (glucose, insuline, azote alpha-aminé, urée, cholestérol et triglycérides) mesurés à jeun ou pendant six heures après le repas chez huit chiens adultes en bonne santé. Les régimes enrichis en pulpes ont entraîné une augmentation significative de l'excrétion fécale totale, de l'excrétion de MS dans les matières fécales, une diminution de la teneur en MS des fèces ainsi qu'une diminution des coefficients de digestibilité des principaux nutriments. Le régime contenant la pulpe de betterave a entraîné une diminution de la glycémie à jeun, de l'insulinémie et des concentrations en triglycérides postprandiales, des concentrations en urée et en cholestérol mesurées avant et après le repas. Le régime contenant la pulpe de chicorée a provoqué une diminution de l'insulinémie postprandiale, des concentrations en urée et en cholestérol à jeun et après le repas. Ces deux types de pulpes, semblables par leur composition, induisent les mêmes types d'effets sur les paramètres fécaux et la digestibilité des nutriments, mais les effets systémiques sont plus importants lors de la distribution de pulpes de betterave. Intake, digestibility, degradation kinetic and fermentation were studied with bulls offered fattening diets with four different incorporation rates of rapeseed meal obtained by pressure; the ether extract content was 8.6% and the glucosinolate content 17,6 mu molg. The control diet was made of sugar beet pulp, cereals, soya bean meal and linseed meal. In the three other diets, nitrogen from rapeseed meal provided 33, 66 or 100% of nitrogen from soya bean meal or linseed meal. The intakes of the control diet were 94.3 +/- 7.3 g/kg metabolic body weight. Intakes were maintained high in the diet with 33, 66 or 100% of protein from rapeseed meal at 93.5 +/- 7.7; 93.0 +/- 5.0 and 93.5 +/- 7.7 g/kg, respectively. The apparent digestibility of rapeseed meal in the ration containing only rapeseed meal was high at 74.9 +/- 1.9% for dry matter, 76.5 +/- 2.1% for organic matter, 69.9 +/- 3.9% for nitrogen, 59.1 +/- 4.8% for ADF and 74.6 +/- 6.9% for ether extract. Dry matter of rapeseed meal was less degradable (57.8 +/- 5.0%) than that of soya bean meal (65.5 +/- 2.6%) or of linseed meal (61.6 +/- 4.2%) but was not as well protected than that of protected soya bean meal (43.6 +/- 2.6%) (P < 0.001). Similar trends were observed for the degradability of nitrogen (P < 0.001). Ether extract of rapeseed meal was more degradable than that of linseed meal (P < 0.001). There were no significant effects of the incorporation rate of rapeseed meal on the pH in the rumen. The fermentations were mainly of the acetate type with usual concentrations of propionate, butyrate, total volatile fatty acids, glucose or alpha amino nitrogen. Ammonia concentration was higher with the control diet and lower with the diet with 100% of protein from rapeseed meal. Fatty acids of rapeseed meal were more protected against saturation by the rumen microorganisms than in linseed meal. [less ▲]

Objective-To evaluate effects of a blend of fructo-oligosaccharides and sugar beet fiber (4:1) at 3 incorporation rates on nutrient digestibility and plasma glucose, insulin, alpha-aminonitrogen, urea, cholesterol, and triglycerides concentrations measured weekly in nonfed dogs and during a 360-minute period after a meal. Animals-8 castrated 1 to 1.4-year-old young adult male Beagles weighing 10.0 to 13.5 kg. Procedure-Diets containing 2 incorporation rates of a blend of fructo-oligosaccharides and sugar beet fiber (5 and 10% on a dry matter basis [diets B and C, respectively]) were compared with a control diet without additional fiber (diet A). The 3 diets were evaluated for ability to modify digestibility of dry and organic matter, protein, fat, and ash and for effects on plasma glucose, insulin, alpha-aminonitrogen, urea, cholesterol, and triglycerides concentrations. Each diet was fed for 6 weeks; plasma samples were collected weekly before feeding and after feeding on the last day of the period, During 1 week at the end of the 6-week period, dogs were kept in metabolic cages. Each period of the block was followed by a 4-week washout period. Results-Incorporating the blend of fructo-oiigosaccharides and sugar beet fiber in the diet was associated with greater passage of wet feces (diets B and C) and lower protein digestibility (diet C). Postprandial glucose (diet C), urea (diets B and C) and triglyceride (diets B and C) concentrations were significantly (P < 0.01) decreased. Weekly preprandial measurements were characterized by decreased urea (diets B and C), cholesterol (diet C), and triglycerides (diets B and C) concentrations (P < 0.001). Conclusion-Chronic consumption of fermentable fiber is associated with mildly decreased protein digestibility and with metabolic effects in nonfed or fed dogs. Clinical Relevance-A blend of fructo-oligosaccharides and sugar beet fiber should he tested as a dietary aid for treatment of chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus or hyperlipidemia, in dogs. Ausgewachsene Beagle-Hunde erhielten eine Kontrolldiaet (I) aus Hackfleisch und Reis oder mit Cellulose (II), Pektin (III) bzw. Guar (IV) angereicherte Diaeten mit einem Anteil von 3.4% in der Trockenmasse. Bei Diaet IV tendierte die Magenentleerungsrate zu niedrigeren Werten. Die intestinale Absorption von Xylose wurde durch die Diaeten IV und III nicht beeinflusst, aber durch Diaet II sign. verlangsamt. Die Varianten III und IV fuehrten zu geringeren Trockenmassegehalten im Kot(p less than 0.001). Die zugefuehrten Faserstoffe senkten teilweise die Naehrstoffverdaulichkeit. Die preprandialen Plasmakonzentrationen an Glucose, Insulin, alpha-Amino-N, Harnstoff und Triglyceriden blieben unbeeinflusst. Die Diaet IV bewirkte einen deutlichreduzierten postprandialen Anstieg von alpha-Amino-N (p less than 0.05) und Harnstoff (p less than 0.01) im Plasma sowie geringere Cholesteringehalte bei gefuetterten und nuechternen Tieren (p less than 0.05). Ein weiterer Versuch mit 3.5% bzw. 7% Guaranteil in der Diaet zeigte dosisabhaengige Effekte. [less ▲]

Whereas reliable measurements of diaphragmatic force and electrical activity are now available in calves, evidence that substrate contents in the bovine diaphragm can be accurately measured is still lacking. The purposes of the present study were therefore a) to describe and test the reliability of methods and procedures used for sampling, lyophilisation, extraction and dosage of muscular lactate, glycogen and creatine contents and b) to report the variation in their levels found along the bovine diaphragm and among individuals. The repeatability of the results yielded by a) assaying the extracts, b) processing and assaying the extracts and c) taking samples at different sites in the muscle was assessed. Neither assay, nor processing effects were significant (P < or = 0.05). Substrates were found to be homogeneously distributed within the two muscles studied. Substrate contents expressed per unit of muscle weight or total creatine were neither more or less variable than when expressed per unit of dry matter. [less ▲]
