In Belgium, the most common approach for nearly Zero Energy Buildings is to comply with the locally modified version of the German Passive House (PH) Standard that requires a very low conductivity of exterior walls. The conventional PH brick constructions are dominated by building materials with high environmental impact including concrete blocks, firebrick and petrochemical insulation materials that produce a great amount of greenhouse gases (GHG). Moreover, there are very few studies that assessed the holistic environmental impact of conventional wall compositions against ecological wall compositions. Therefore, this research compares a traditional Belgian representative wall against a hemp block wall, according to the PH standard. The environmental impact of each wall is quantified through a life cycle assessment. The final results indicate that the hemp wall reinforced with a wood skeleton has a much lower impact on the environment: up to 60% reduction on total primary energy, 72% on climate changes, 93% on eutrophication, 61 % on ozone layer depletion and 74% on acidification. Future work may refine the assessment process. The study provides novel and significant findings that can inform building owners, architects and contractors and encourage them to choose environmentally friendly masonry wall compositions. Roof Stacking represents an approach to accommodate increasing population in the major cities around Europe, new agendas for urban densification emerge in response of finding sustainable solutions to use existing urban infrastructure in the most efficient ways. Several methods for urban densification are being proposed and seen in real life. One of those methods is roof stacking, which is defined as the added structure over the rooftop of an existing building to create one or more stories of living spaces. This report represents the results of conducted investigation on roof stacking method as a sustainable approach for urban densification. The aim of this report is to present a guideline for roof stacking construction approaches and methods and present the learned lessons through interviewing notable architects from different European countries who applied roof stacking. This report identifies the challenges and opportunities when applying roof stacking in addition to proposing recommended solution for the different obstacles that are faced when adding extensions on the rooftops. Iran has diverse climate variability, comfort boundaries for each geographic region must be defined in order to present current architectural design recommendations and proper mechanical systems design to meet building's heating and cooling energy demand. Therefore, two components of the temperature and relative humidity of 148 stations with the longest common statistical period of twenty years (1994–2014), which have been in daily scale were selected to calibrate and redefine the thermal boundary conditions in Iran. Givoni chart was used to define and visualize the bioclimatic conditions in buildings. The results of this study indicate that only 18% of the 148 stations days, falls in the thermal comfort bioclimatic conditions. After calibration of the base comfort temperature, we found that the upper threshold of this component varies from at least 22.62 °C for Ardebil to 25.94 °C for Dorudzan station and the low threshold of this component belongs to Ardebil with at least 20.13 °C up to its maximum value with 22 °C which belongs to Dorudzan. Spatial distribution of cooling and heating days show that their maximum threshold has been for cores in Northeastern half of Iran, Iran's Western half and some Central parts of Iran and the minimum threshold of these two components belongs to the beaches of north and south of the country. The findings present updated thermal comfort boundaries that can be used by architects, engineers and policy makers to achieve, in turn, more energy efficient homes and high quality indoor and outdoor living environments. Several energy efficiency concepts and comfort models emerged in the last 15 years seeking high performance buildings and optimal occupant comfort conditions. The aim of high performance buildings is to reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption of buildings while maintain a fit to purpose comfort. In this context, this work raises the question of fir to purpose comfort models that can from one side reduce the energy consumption of typical office buildings in hot climates (cooling dominated) while on the other side ensuring indoor thermal comfort. Indeed, studies that address energy efficiency are many, however it is in most cases applied to temperate or cold climates and barely explored for hot climates. The objective of this paper is to (1) combine several comfort models for a net zero energy building in hot climates, (2) select the comfort model that shows the optimal comfort quality of indoor environment and (3) compare the building's annual energy consumption for each used comfort model. To respond to our research problems, a methodology has been established, which goes through several phases. First identifying the different comfort models comfortable to use in hot climates (ISO 7730 / EN 15251 / adaptive ASHRAE / Givoni), secondly selecting a typical validated office building model as a reference building and finally selecting representative cities in the Mediterranean arid and hot climate (Algiers / Sicily / Cairo / Dubai). The study used building performance simulation to generate the different results on the energy consumption and the operative temperatures of the different models of comfort in each city. The paper ultimately identifies the fit to purpose comfort models for a medium size net zero energy office building in hot climates. The paper presents a comparison that can help building professional to identify the most appropriate comfort model that allows optimizing energy consumption, ensuring thermal comfort for robust perfromnce of net zero energy buildings in hot climates. The building sector in Romania is dominated by residential buildings that are old and have poor thermal performance. As member of the European Union, Romania has to reach the objectives imposed by the Directive 2009/28/EC and to fulfill the requirements of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) by year 2020. To reach the 2020 objectives, the old buildings from the Romanian building stock should be rehabilitated and the new buildings should be designed according to the latest thermal performance characteristics. The following paper presents the literature review of building energy performance in Romania. The purpose of the literature review analysis is to provide an overview on current building energy efficiency in Romania. The paper also presents future perspectives on implementation of high performance buildings such as the Passive House (PH), nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) and Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB). The reviewed publications and case studies are classified under three categories: policy and regulations, technology and feasibility. Finally, the paper presents a holistic perspective on the Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOTs) of energy efficiency in Romania's residential building sector. [less ▲]

High performance buildings including net zero energy buildings (NZEB) are facing difficulty to become market mainstream in warm and hot climates. Beside the economic there are serious technical and design challenges that hampers design teams design, construct and operate NZEB in mixed and cooling dominated climates. There is a difficulty to make the Passive House standard cross the heating dominated climatic zones in Northern and Central Europe to get implemented in mixed or cooling dominated climates as an ultra-energy efficient building concept. There is a need for setting new climate adaptive energy efficiency target metrics for NZEBs in warm and hot climates. This paper presents guidance and recommendations on the necessary performance target metrics for NZEBs and makes them explicit. Results are based on cross analysis of several case studies, presenting an overview of challenges and providing recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers Worldwide with a focus on the European construction sector. By defining the performance thresholds for NZEBs including the metrics we offer design team the possibility of verification and design assessment during early design decision making phases to instil a kind of practical, evidence based and quantifiable guidance for high performance buildings and in particular NZEBs. The assessment of adaptive facades presents a barrier in light of the fact that there is no settled assessment technique se to systematically reach this goal. Many of the available façade performance evaluation systems or frameworks have restricted applicability for such advanced building facades. The complexity of adaptive or dynamic facades evaluation is related to the performance evaluation of façade elements, systems and overall building performance coupled to occupant behavior and occupant satisfaction. In this context, we present\s a case study for an adaptive sunscreens façade and evaluate its performance and occupant behavior. The evaluation focuses mainly on pre and post construction phase of adaptive facades: The design assist phase (including the durability test, visual mockup, onsite mashrabiya mounting and weather stripping), the commissioning phase (field verification and performance testing) and the monitoring phase. The selected project is a 150 meters high twin tower that stands with honey-comb inspired structure and automated dynamic solar screen that responds to the sun’s movement. These solar screens respond dynamically and automatically to the angle of the sun which improves the control over energy consumption, solar radiation and glare with the ability to admit natural light into the building. The paper is part of the research activities of working group 3 of the European COST Action 1403 on “Adaptive Facades “. Different methods were used for evaluation, this include: interviews with the architect and façade engineer and technical control specialist, occupants, reviews of standard and codes, review of energy models and a systematic design process mapping. A documentation of the case study describing the post construction occupant comfort, and façade operation was prepared. This paper’s audience is mainly project managers, architects, building façade engineers together with facility managers concerned with the process of design, construction and operation of adaptive sunscreens facades. The outcome of this study identifies quantifiable performance indicators and effective strategies for the design and performance evaluation of optimal adaptive facades. [less ▲]

Green Building movement has grown in Jordan for the last 10 year for environmental and financial reasons directly related to energy consumption and cost. Despite the few success stories, green design and green buildings are not yet the norm in the building sector in the country. One main concern for design engineers as well as investors and building owners is the extra cost green building will bring compared to traditional one. This assumption is wrong since a building cost should be analyzed through its life cycle, which not only include design and construction but also operation and maintenance costs as well. Since issuing the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Law No. 13 of 2012, Jordan opened a new era in the RE and EE, a changing point directly related to this law is the ability to sell electricity production to electricity companies and not only being consumers. The building sector is a direct winner if designers and engineers make right decisions. An ambitious but possible goal is to design and build Net Zero Buildings, which are buildings that produce energy as much as they consume. The aim of this paper is to provide real life cost-effective building strategies and design scenarios that will lead to a successful near Zero Energy Building in Jordan. The paper will use a representative residential apartment in the city of Amman (135- 155 m2) as the base case for the study. The design will be upgraded to include main green building strategies recommended for the climatic zone, provide loads for required systems, and test them all against performance and cost. Design scenarios will be tested and refined tell reach the best design formula that will be both functional and cost effective. The paper will provide a list of recommendations for best economically feasible design solutions and system selections that can lead to a near Zero Energy Building in Jordan for residential apartments. In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEBs), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out the enormous information gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarizes the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEBs implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The aim of the study was to enhance the understanding and provide and overview on future challenges of residential nZEBs in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEBs implementation and especially for existing buildings. It is essential creating a common approach to further develop nZEBs concepts and definitions in adaptation with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe. The paper provides suggestions for minimum energy efficiency and renewable energy thresholds to shift the identified gaps into opportunities for future development in deep renovation of buildings. This paper reports the initial experience of applying the enriched skeleton mapping technique as innovative and meaningful learning methods within a flipped class teaching setting. Driven by the low confidence and autonomy of many undergraduates; this study focus on stimulating collaboration and interactive learning. The study was performed in a course labeled ‘sustainable building construction technology’ of the Bachelor of Architectural Engineering program at Liege University (Ulg). First year and second year students, were assigned to an experimental group of 27 students and a control group of 8. In the experimental group, students worked together in pairs on mini-concepts and created enriched skeleton maps for the course content. The control group received a regular ex-cathedra course. The results show that students who used the enriched skeleton mapping technique were more engaged and outperformed the control group. Enriched skeleton concept mapping fostered deep learning and resulted in a better understanding of the course mini concepts in addition to the course structure and domain. Students of the enriched skeleton mapping found learning to be more ‘useful, stimulating and more engaging’, whereas students of the congenital ex-cathedra curriculum found learning to be ‘passive and boring’. A combination of both techniques may provide the most effective training for undergraduate engineering students. [less ▲]

Looking today to the challenges for planning and design of sustainable built environment including, carbon emissions, climate change, human health, water problems, biodiversity, scarcity of resources, depletion of fossil fuel, population growth and urbanization; sustainable architecture will play a key role for the sustainable development of society as a whole. In the context of an architectural design studio, this paper presents the experience of introducing the concept of regenerative design within a Belgian engineering faculty. The regenerative design objective and principles are used as a method to develop engineers’ capabilities to design within a circular economy paradigm. The aim of the study is to evaluate the adoption of circular economy principles and their influence on the decision making and final outcomes on third-year architectural engineering students at the University of Liege (Ulg), Faculty of Applied Sciences in 2014 and 2015. The paper utilizes two design studios outcomes in the form of projects evaluation and students feedback, in the form of interviews and surveys, in order to assess the students’ knowledge uptake, learned skills and design capabilities. Students completed a knowledge, skills, and attitudes questionnaire before the curriculum, after the final learning experience, and one year later. The paper provides results that shed light on the opportunities, challenges and architectural engineer’s needs to engage in a circular built environment. [less ▲]

Iran is a country with a variety of different climates. Determining the threshold temperatures suitable for providing thermal and climatic comfort is necessary and vital to its population well-being. This research presents new threshold temperatures in order to calculate the degree day index required for heating and cooling by taking advantage of the 12 stations that are representative of the diversity of Iran's climate. Using Olgyay diagram, different bioclimatic ranges of 12 weather stations and their frequencies were compiled, processes and analysed. Mean daily data of temperature and relative humidity were used for the period of 1950e2010. Based on the frequencies of temperature readings falling in Olgyay's diagram comfort zone, representive temperature thresholds were selected based on 40 to 60 percentiles or (P20), 25e75% percentile (P50) and the threshold of 10e90% percentile. The findings of this study shows that Mashhad with 29.6% and Anzali with 2.33% of frequencies, have experienced the maximum and minimum days of comfort. After analyzing various percentiles to determine the threshold temperatures, it was observed that there is a little difference among the stations for determining the minimum threshold for the comfort. Differences are more obvious in the maximum thresholds. In total, minimum base temperatures (HDD) belonged to Ardabil stations that were 20.50, 20.90 and 20 deg C for P20, P50 and P80 respectively. The maximum temperature for calculating CDD with values of (P20 ¼ 25 C; P50 ¼ 26.25 C; P80 ¼ 27.50 C) is dedicated to Zabol station. The findings present more reasonable thermal comfort thresholds that can be used by architects, engineers and policy makers to achieve, in turn, more energy efficient homes and high quality indoor and outdoor living environments. This work focuses on the city of Huamachuco, a town 3200 meters above sea level in Northern Peru. The main aim of this study is to share and disseminate technological knowledge on architecture, building technology and lifestyle of Huamachuco inhabitants. The paper objective is to (1) highlight the concept of architectural quality in Huamachuco, (2) compare the living environment of existing traditional dwellings in comparison with newly constructed concrete dwellings, and to (3) identify the reasons for neglecting ecological construction technologies and materials in the new built environment. The research methodology went through different phases that range from qualitative data collection and quantitative measuring, to data analysis and findings reporting. Firstly, a typological study was conducted visiting 110 houses. The typological study enabled us to describe and understand the housing typologies and classify those under four major typologies according to their construction techniques: 1) adobe, 2) rammed earth, 3) concrete and 4) mixed technique. Secondly, detailed field studies were conducted for representative houses representing the four categories. Finally, 10 houses have been thoroughly audited for using measuring equipment to collect data related to temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, lighting intensity, and envelope thermography. The evaluation of adaptive facades presents a challenge because there is no established evaluation strategy to systematically reach this goal and many of the available façade performance evaluation tools have limited applicability for such advanced building facades. This paper presents a case study for an adaptive glass façade and evaluates its performance. This paper is a part of an ongoing research in the field of sustainable urban densification through providing innovative solutions for zero energy light weight construction. The focus aim of this research is to identify the gaps in the construction solutions for roof stacking, to feed in the innovation pipeline of the European construction landscape in the coming years. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different case studies and efforts in the field of roof raising and its repetition potentials. Based on a structured review, 8 different cases from three different European countries were sorted, placing a variety of methods in comparison with each other. The main contribution of this review lies in the analyses of the existing information in this field and the classification of the different validated methods and approaches that has been used. Finally, despite the existing challenges, it was found that the concept of roof stacking can be widely spread and applied in different contexts. Future research is going to investigate possible solution and to formulate structured scientific approaches to widen its application. [less ▲]

C’est en Wallonie que la naissance de la seconde révolution industrielle a débuté. La Wallonie est une terre d’innovation. Dans ce contexte, c’est le lieu de création comme le béton de chanvre, les briques d’argiles, les panneaux photovoltaïques en acier, les panneaux de paille préfabriqués etc.,… Dans le contexte de lutte contre le changement climatique, du développement durable et d’économie circulaire, les ingénieurs architectes s’allient afin de réinventer une architecture responsable économiquement et écologiquement. Les activités de l’atelier 2014 se concevaient comme une synergie entre les apports théoriques inter disciplinaires, l’expérimentation complète de durabilité régénérative, la construction circulaire et leur intégration dans un projet architecturale. Grâce à un engagement remarquable des étudiants de l’atelier de SBD Lab (Sustainable Buildings Design Lab) et à l’apport enrichissants d’intervenants de multiples disciplines, les résultats obtenus durant cette année 2014 ont complété les prévisions faites pour un site à Liège. D’un point de vue architectural, la multiplicité et l’originalité de solutions proposées par les étudiants nourrissent les réflexions en cours à l’échelle de la ville de Liège et les questions relatives aux conditions de densification et renouveau urbain. D’un point de vue didactique, cette démarche exigeante a favorisé l’émergence chez chaque étudiant d’un savoir structuré tant au niveau conceptuel que pratique. [less ▲]

Belgium, like many European Countries, has a serious challenge in the housing sector. The Federal planning bureau estimates the increase of the population by one million inhabitants by 2030, which represent 600,000 additional family requiring accesses to new housing facilities. There is a significant housing shortage for individual, single parent families, seniors and students. Population ageing (mainly due to increase life expectancy) combined with a constant grow rate of individuals living in collective households, leads to a substantial increase of demand of collective households. Furthermore, the stringent European performance environmental regulations for the building sector require that by 2020, all new construction are zero or nearly zero energy, (equivalent to 15 kWh/m2/year), with 60% efficient on-site coverage by renewable energy. The shortage of vacant land and the increasing energy performance requirements is pushing the idea of urban densification and zero energy construction households. [less ▲]

Abstract Regenerative design holds great promise for a new era of sustainable and positive impact architecture, sparking considerable interest among architects, building professionals and their clients. However, the translational arm of regenerative design in practice is in a relatively primitive state. Although a number of theoretical definitions and studies have been initiated, the early returns point to several inherent application problems. In this regard, the professional and scientific potential of regenerative architecture can only be fully realized by the identification of the key barriers to projects design, construction and operation. In this paper, we compare two state of the art buildings to address the critical steps in the transition from the negative impact reduction architecture to the positive impact regenerative architecture, utilizing life cycle analysis. The case studies analysis and comparison can serve as an inspiring eye opener and provide a vision for architects and building professionals in the fields of high performance buildings and regenerative architecture.
