Local chicken breeds contribute significantly to the world production of meat and eggs. Indigenous breeds represent 80% of the world poultry population. However, the majority of these breeds has not been recorded and studied. About 40% of poultry breeds have an unknown risk status. Hence, considerable efforts are necessary to evaluate them. Obviously, managing animal genetic resources requires the identification of the concerned phenotypes, population sizes, their geographical distribution, and their genetic diversity within and between breeds, using molecular biology methods. Nevertheless, the thorough understanding of the breeding contexts within which they are found is an oft-neglected prerequisite to set up sustainable management strategy of these resources. In the framework of our studies, the characterization of local poultry populations and their breeding systems have been carried out in Northeastern Algeria, Northern Vietnam and Southwestern Congo (DRC). A large phenotypic diversity has been revealed in each region of study, contributing different insights into the concept of local breed. The breeding systems have in common multiple objectives (nutritional, financial, and socio-cultural). Women and children played an important role in family poultry farming. The latter elements are, however, subject to variations between the regions of study and within them. Thus, solutions aiming at the promotion of biodiversity in poultry need to be tailored in accordance with the uniqueness of each breeding context. [less ▲]

In the context of the valorization of poultry biodiversity, this work represents a step toward a better knowledge of the production abilities of local chicken breeds in Vietnam. Local chicken breeds are indeed particularly well suited for low-input rearing systems, as widely practiced in rural households of Vietnam. The socio-economic importance of these breeds might be underpinned by a market valorization through the mounting of differentiated quality value chains. Such a strategy needs the production potential of these local breeds to be assessed using parameters of egg quality and quantity. This study presents data about egg quality traits in two chicken breeds, the Ri and the Mia. The former is the most widespread breed in Vietnam, while the latter is known to be in danger of extinction. Nineteen parameters of quality of ninety eggs of Ri chickens and sixty eggs of Mia chickens were measured, each for both 40 and 60-weeks old hens to take hens ages into account.Mean egg weight of Mia eggs (44.70g) was significantly (p<0.001) higher than that of Ri eggs (41.68g). The yolk to albumen ratio was not significantly different (p>0.05) between the two breeds at the age of 40 weeks (Ri: 0.55; Mia: 0.58). For 60-weeks old hens, the ratio became significantly (p<0.05) higher in Mia eggs compared to Ri eggs (0.64 vs. 0.57). No significant difference (p>0.05) was recorded between the two breeds for parameters used for egg freshness assessment (Haugh’s units and pH of albumen and yolk) or eggshell resistance (maximal breakage force). Despite the small sample available for the study (due to the low availability of Mia hens and eggs), significant differences in egg quality traits were thus observed between these two breeds. In Vietnam, 84% of the 188 million chickens are indigenous. The following local breeds are recorded: Ri, Mia, Te, Tau Vang, Ac, Oke, H’mong, Tre, Choi, Phu Lu Te, To, Dan Khao, Ho, Dong Tao and Van Phu. Mia, Ho and Dong Tao are reported as endangered or critical, while the Van Phu breed could have been lost during the last years. The phenotypes of the Mia and Ri breeds are described as quite close. The objective of this study is to characterize phenotypically Ri and Mia chickens. The morpho-biometric characterization was conducted according to the recommendation of FAO (1981). A total of 227 adults Ri (174 females and 53 males) and 53 adults Mia (18 males and 35 females) were used for the study. The following colors were observed for Ri and Mia respectively: tan (43.17% and 37.73%), gold salmon (24.23% and 26.42%), wheat (15.42% and 26.42%), dark red (9.69% and 5.66%), silver salmon (3.52% and 3.77%) and copper black (3.96% and 0%). Comb was mostly simple (91.19% and 100%) and red (100% and 100%) for both breeds. The wattles were of the same color as the comb while the color of the legs was yellow. The weights of adult males (2433.89g) and females (1752.86g) of the Mia breed were significantly higher than those of Ri (2053.02g and 1459.22g for males and females respectively). The results show that the external aspect of both breeds is not very different while body weights in the Ri breed were found lower than in the Mia breed. [less ▲]

The need to set up efficient and sustainable surveillance networks is a major concern which must be continually placed at the heart of the overall issue of development. In developing countries, the political priority to reduce poverty means that it is vital to include social aspects in public decision making on health management in general. This focus on social aspects can be considered all the more important regarding surveillance as it is deeply embedded in agents’ everyday life. The flow of information about animal health involves different non-monetary costs, ensuing from stigmatization or from social pressure to withhold or disclose information. Understanding, measuring and alleviating these social costs of information is required to ensure the effectiveness and viability of surveillance. The present study considers the case of highly pathogenic avian influenza surveillance in Vietnam. It aims at establishing a protocol allowing for understanding and quantifying social costs incurred by surveillance agents at the community level. In this prospect, tools and concepts from anthropology, participative epidemiology and experimental economics were combined. More particularly, social network analysis, participatory observation, companion modeling and stated preference surveys were applied for the thorough examination of constraints and costs of health information flows. The opportunity for the scaling-up of such methodologies and for the inclusion of the so-elicited quantitative values in socio-economic evaluation of surveillance systems are discussed. [less ▲]

Dans le contexte de valorisation de la biodiversité avicole, ce travail se propose de poser les bases d’une réhabilitation des poules locales Vietnamiennes, particulièrement adaptées aux conditions d’élevage peu intensives de ce pays. La grande importance socioéconomique et culturelle de ces races pourrait être renforcée et exploitée à des fins de développement rural par la promotion de filières de qualités différenciées. De telles évolutions nécessitent de caractériser le potentiel de production de ces races sur le plan qualitatif. Cette étude a pour objectif l’étude de la qualité des œufs des races de poules vietnamiennes Ri et Mia. La première est la poule la plus répandue au Vietnam et la deuxième est une race menacée d’extinction. Dix neuf caractères de qualité externe et interne de 90 œufs de la poule Ri et 60 œufs de la poule Mia ont été mesurés à 40 et à 60 semaines. Le poids entier moyen des œufs de la Mia (44,70g) était significativement (p<0,001) supérieur à celui de la poule Ri (41,68g). Le rapport jaune/blanc n’était pas significativement (p>0,05) différent à l’âge de 40 semaines (Ri : 0,55 ; Mia : 0,58). À l’âge de 60 semaines, ce rapport devient significativement supérieur pour les œufs Mia alors que celui des œufs Ri (0,64 vs. 0,57 ; p<0,05). Aucune différence significative (p>0,05) n’a été enregistrée entre les deux races pour les paramètres de fraîcheur des œufs (unités d’Haugh et pH des blancs et des jaunes) et de résistance des coquilles (force maximale de rupture). Malgré le faible effectif de cette étude, des différences significatives entre les performances de production ont été observées entre ces deux races phénotypiquement et génotypiquement proches. The high rate of agricultural land conversion for industrialization causes the complex agrarian transformation in current Vietnamese land regime.This research investigates the mechanisms of social differentiation by analyzing the ways in which different rural households construct their livelihood strategies along the rural-urban continuum to response to agricultural land conversion. The study shows that the spatial and sectoral interfaces generate the peculiar mechanisms of social differentiation which include : i. the land alternations caused by the boosting land market as the motivation for land concentration and informal land usage changes; ii. the possibilities of capital accumulation from lucrative economic activities. This paper discusses the growing diversity of surviving and accumulating means in the wider range of rural-urban and agriculture-industry linkages. [less ▲]

Poultry production plays an important role in the structure of familial incomes in Vietnam but this activity is currently met with difficulties caused by the great influence of inputs/outputs on the markets and the risks of epidemic diseases. This research was conducted for interviews and records according to book keeping among 280 poultry smallholders; 100 intermediary agents of poultry meat supply chains at the various scales of poultry supply chains and the diversification of poultry markets (poultry producers, private hatcheries, collectors of live poultry, slaughter houses and distributors of poultry meat) in Hanoi Suburb between 2009 and 2010. This research aimed at addressing to improving the income of small poultry producers and identifying the intermediary economic agents and its economic distributions. Furthermore, this research would like to solve restoring the poultry production and the various restraints faced of food contamination in poultry meat supply chains. Institutional organization and financial analysis approaches in different agents was used to calculate the value-added and to explain this problem in poultry meat commodity chains. Institutional organization of poultry meat supply chains is really complex with diverse economic agents. There are not many poultry meat products have a good traceability. These recent years, broiler industrial chickens and ducks met with some difficulties with the profits were very unstable or loss-making. But this industrial broiler chicken still occupies more and more an important role for the demand of domestic consumers. In addition, color broiler chickens were chosen for more satisfying the Vietnamese taste. In fact, local or color crossbred broiler chickens have a good economic performance but the output is still instable. Traders of live poultry and manual slaughter-house have a good economic performance caused by using the source of familial labor and selling directly to consumers. The systems of automatic skill of live poultry have still limited. The consumers do not be informed the useful information on food safety standards. [less ▲]

Agricultural accumulation has been one of the main source determined the social differentiation in Vietnamese countryside. The complexities of agrarian changes under the post - socialist industrialization with high rate of agricultural land conversion in recent context reveal the new forms of capital accumulation and social differentiation. This research investigates how land conversion process to industrial zones and clusters affected to the way that different groups of peasant households accumulate their resources. The study was carried out in 3 districts of Hung Yen province from 2006 to 2010. The study results are as follows: first, the land conversion to industrialization has impact on not only the decline of household landholdings but also the changes value of land which are the sources of social conflicts and informal land transfer. Second, in the context of land conversion to industrialization with tiny plots of land, low return from agricultural production and more opportunities of non-farm activities, even when non-farm employment is very profitable, peasant households are not likely to give up their land but maintaining agricultural production for not only their basic and secure livelihood but also for their identity. Third, among the affected peasant groups, the households with non-farm background tend to be in better position in engaging to high - earning activities. They are likely the rich peasants in opposed to the poor group with farming background and lost more than 50% of their agricultural land. This research has showed that the industrialization policies have to deal with the proportion of agricultural land would be transferred for industrialization zones and other measures in order to limit the conflicts as well as the social differentiation in countryside. Located in the Red River Delta region, Hung Yen province has 923000 ha of total land area, of which agricultural land area occupied 60.67%. The agricultural land area per labor is 0.1 ha. However, it has been annually decreasing due to the development of industrial zone, construction of urban zone, expansion of road… For these reasons, the stainable development for production and processing of agricultural products plays a very important role in job creation for farmers who loosed their own agricultural land, avoidance of quantity and quality loosing of raw agricultural products and increase in economic efficiency of agricultural production and processing. The production and processing of canna are traditional jobs of rural households in Hung Yen. They not only have been creating jobs for rural households but also increasing in their income. Beside the social and economic benefit created by these activities, the processing activity has caused many negative consequences. It led to environmental pollution due to its waste, overuse of chemical substances. Desiccated of vermicelli in bad condition resulted in the unsafe food. Therefore, this study is conducted to deeply investigate both positive effects and negative consequences created by production and processing of canna vermicelli in term of economic, social and environmental aspects. This study concentrates on the farm households; discuss advantages and disadvantages of production inputs, processing techniques and output market of their products from arrowroot to vermicelli; and find out solutions for the sustainable development for production and processing of vermicelli.
