Very little research has been conducted so far into the general problem of producing a 3D soundscape consistent with the visual content of a 3D-stereoscopic movie. First, the following 3D sound reproduction techniques are reviewed: Vector Base Amplitude Panning (VBAP), binaural and transaural techniques, Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) and Ambisonics. Second, the new challenges of 3D cinema are introduced. Third, we reconsider each 3D audio technique in the light of these challenges. We find that, at least in theory, a completely personalized soundscape is needed and that, due to various technical reasons, only binaural reproduction through headphones is able to accurately produce a 3D soundscape consistent with a 3D-stereo movie in a theater environment. We consider the problem of improving outcomes for neurosurgery patients by enhancing intraoperative navigation and guidance. Current navigation systems do not accurately account for intraoperative brain deformation. We focus on the brain shift deformation that occurs just after the opening of the skull and dura. The heart of our system is a nonrigid registration technique using a biomechanical model. We specifically work on two axes: the representation of the structures in the biomechanical model and the evaluation of the surface landmark displacement fields between intraoperative MR images. Using the modified Hausdorff distance as an image similarity measure, we demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the alignment of the intraoperative images. ' 2009 Elsevier B.V. Interactivity is one of the key challenges for immersive applications like gaming. Manufacturers have been working towards interfaces that are driven by a device (e.g. a Wiimote) or interfaces that are controlled by a camera with a subsequent computer vision module. Both approaches have unique advantages, but they do not permit to localize users in the scene with an appropriate accuracy. Therefore, we propose to use both a range camera and accurate range sensors to enable the interpretation of movements. This paper describes a platform that uses a range camera to acquire the silhouettes of users, regardless of illumination, and to improve the pose recovery with range information after some image processing steps. In addition, to circumvent the difficult process of calibration required to map range values to physical distances, we complete the system with several range laser sensors. These sensors are located in a horizontal plane, and measure distances up to a few centimeters. We combine all these measurements to obtain a localization map, used to locate users in the scene at a negligible computational cost. Our method fills a gap in 3D applications that requires absolute positions. [less ▲]

In this paper, we describe a new automatic target recognition method for classifying targets according to their bistatic backscattering coefficients. The classification model is based on the construction of subspaces, one per target class. Results show an overall correct classification rate of about 83%, indicating that our method seems to be valid. Further improvements of the algorithm are also discussed. [less ▲]

In this paper, we describe a new automatic target recognition algorithm for classifying SAR images based on the PiXiT im- age classifier. It uses randomized sub-windows extraction and extremely randomized trees (extra-trees). This approach re- quires very little pre-processing of the images, thereby lim- iting the computational load. It was successfully tested on an extended version of the public standard MSTAR database, that includes targets of interest, false targets, and background clutter. A misclassification rate of about three percent has been achieved. [less ▲]
