Abstract. The Multicoloured Asian Ladybird, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is known to thrive principally in shrubby and arboreal habitats. This study focuses on the occurrence of this exotic species and its seasonal abundance in various field crops. The abundance of adults, larvae and pupae of H. axyridis was evaluated over a three-year period, from 2009 to 2011, in four important agronomical crops (wheat, corn, broad bean and potato) in Belgium. From May to September, 48 1-m² quadrats were visually inspected in each of the fields sampled on several farms every seven days. H. axyridis colonized and reproduced in all of the four crops studied, with the largest numbers recorded in corn and broad bean crops. Larvae and adults of H. axyridis were recorded mainly in corn and to a much less extent in wheat and potato crops. From 2009 to 2011, the mean weekly abundance of H. ayxridis remained constant except in corn crops, where the recorded densities of all the immature stages and adults were higher in 2011 than in 2009. The population dynamics of aphids and H. axyridis are well described by a symmetric logistic function (S-shape) of cumulative population size. H. axyridis was not always recorded where aphids were abundant, e.g. aphids were abundant on wheat where no H. axyridis were recorded. H. axyridis start reproducing after the peak in aphid population, suggesting that H. axyridis is able to complete its development by feeding on alternative prey such as larvae and pupae of the same and other species of ladybird and other aphidophagous species. H. axyridis is often considered to be bivoltine but it only completes one generation per year in field crops. The second generation generally develops late in the season in other habitats. [less ▲]

The multicolored Asian ladybeetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was introduced into Western Europe in the late 1990s. This exotic and invasive species is known to thrive principally in shrubs and arboreal habitats. We focus on a phonological model and on annual abundance in various field crops. The abundance of H. axyridis adults and larvae were evaluated during a three-year period, from 2009 to 2011, in four important agronomical crops (wheat, corn, broad bean and potato) in Belgium. H. axyridis colonizes and reproduces in all four crops studied, with larger densities observed in corn and broad bean. The reproduction of H. axyridis occurs principally in corn and occurred much less in wheat and potato. From 2009 to 2011, abundances of H. axyridis populations were constant except in corn, where the observed densities of all immature stages and adults were higher in 2011 than in 2009. The Multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), native to Asia, is an invasive species in many European and American countries. Initially introduced as a biological control agent against aphids and coccids in greenhouses, this alien species rapidly invaded many habitats such as forests, meadows, wetlands, and agricultural crops. This paper reviews the habitats (forests, crops, herbs, gardens and orchards) where H. axyridis has been observed, either during insect samplings or as part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Studies have referenced H. axyridis on 106 plant taxa (35 arboreal species, 21 crop species, 27 herbaceous species, 11 ornamental species, and 12 orchard species) and have identified 89 plant- prey relationships (34 arboreal species, 16 crop species, 13 herbaceous species, 10 ornamental species, and 16 orchard species) in different countries. Harmonia axyridis is more abundant in forest areas, principally on Acer, Salix, Tilia and Quercus, than in agroecosystems. Some plant species, such as Urtica dioica L., which surround crops, contain large numbers of H. axyridis and could constitute important reserves of this alien species in advance of aphid invasions into crops. This review highlights the polyphagy and eurytopic aspect of H. axyridis. [less ▲]

The multicoloured Asian ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), previously introduced as a biological control agent to control aphids populations, is now frequently considered as an intraguild predator, consuming other aphids natural enemies. The interactions between this exotic ladybird and other aphidophagous species present in Belgian agro-ecosystems are mainly asymmetric in support of H. axyridis. An aphidophages sampling has been performed between 2009 and 2011 in four agrosystems such as broad bean, wheat, corn and potato. The sampling method consisted in the counting of aphids and all developmental stages of aphidophages present in quadrats of 1m² from April to September. Harmonia axyridis, the invasive coccinellid, was mainly observed in broad bean (21.84 ± 6.30 individuals/100m²) and corn (70.83±6.60 individuals/100m²) with other aphidophages such as Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), Chrysoperla carnea sensus lato (Stephens), Coccinella septempunctata (Linné) and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (Linné). In corn, our field data showed that immature stages and adults of H. axyridis were found throughout the summer. Adults were observed from mid-June to the beginning of September with two peaks, in the late June and in the beginning of August. The life history of larvae starts in late-June to the beginning of Augustus with only one peak (347.91 ± 59.99 individuals /100m²) in the beginning of July. The peak of H. axyridis arrives when no extraguild preys are present. At this moment, pupae of E. balteatus and C. septempunctata are the main food available to ensure the development of H. axyridis so that native aphidophages could be intraguild prey for H. axyridis. In the four crops, reproduction of H. axyridis starts after those of other aphidophages and so it does not benefit of available prey such as aphid: in corn and broad bean, C. septempunctata reproduce the first, in wheat it is E. balteatus and in potato it is C. carnea. That could be explained by several reasons: (1) H. axyridis reproduces firstly in arboreal habitats and after that comes in agrosystems, (2) the delay between aphidophage reproductions allows a reduction of interactions with other larvae during spring and therefore decrease mortality levels and (3) H. axyridis is able to use pollen as food substitute when no aphids are available. In order to survive cold winters, the invasive multicoloured Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) forms large aggregations in dwellings to overwinter. The factors involved in the selection of aggregation sites remain misunderstood. The work presented herein focussed on the study of the chemical compounds involved in this phenomenon. Chemical and behavioural analyses highlighted that long-chain hydrocarbons lead congeners towards aggregation sites and ensure the cohesion of the cluster. Subsequently, physical factors were investigated. We studied the influence of (1) the density of individuals and (2) the quality of available shelters on H. axyridis decision to settle and aggregate under shelters. A binary choice experiment conducted in laboratory showed that the multicoloured Asian ladybeetles present a permanent aggregative behaviour, even during non-wintering conditions. These experiments also highlighted the existence of social interactions between individuals. All these results contribute to improve knowledge of this behaviour in H. axyridis and could be used in the design of species-specific traps in order to control infestations in dwellings. [less ▲]

The Multicolored Asian ladybird, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), was imported in 1997 in Belgium to control aphid populations. Few years ago after its introduction, this exotic insect was well adapted to temperate climate conditions and spread out all over ecosystems in Europe causing decline of other aphidophagous species. In arboreal habitats, H. axyridis is the most dominant Coccinellids but we are still lacking information about this occurrence in agrosystems. An aphidophages sampling between 2009 and 2011 was realized in four agrosystems such as broad bean, wheat, corn and potato. Nevertheless H. axyridis populations rise (5 times) from 2009 to 2011 in 2011, H. axyridis is the third most observed aphidophages after Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer) and Coccinella septempunctata (Linné). H. axyridis is the dominating species in corn with 70.83±6.60 individuals per 100m². [less ▲]

An inventory of the Coccinellidae present in the collection of the Department of functional and evolutionary Entomology (ULg - Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech) was performed on the period extending from 2001 to 2009. This collection is essentially made up of insects collected by first year students. The aim of this work is to assess the evolution of the species belonging to this family with special interest in their relative amount and the species richness. This study was focused on the data from Wallonia and Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium), not enough insects having been collected in Flanders. Among the identified individuals, 27 species were observed, including 21 belonging to the subfamily of Coccinellinae, 2 to Epilachninae and 4 to Chilocorinae. Most of the species are native to Belgium. However, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas 1773), an exotic species coming from the South-East of Asia, was introduced in Belgium in 1997. This alien ladybird was firstly collected by the students in 2002 and the amount of collected individuals does not cease increasing until 2009. By contrast, a decrease of species richness, as well as the relative amount of Adalia bipunctata (L. 1758), Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L. 1758) and Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata (L. 1758), is highlighted. The multicoloured Asian ladybeetles, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), form large aggregations inside dwellings to survive cold winters, causing annoyances to householders from their number and sometimes the induction of allergic reactions. Migratory flight and macrosite choice of this species is well documented. H. axyridis shows a hypsotactic behaviour and a clear preference for contrasting visual elements. However, how the microsite is selected remains undocumented, although a better understanding of the implicated factors could lead to the development of new control methods for this pest. In this work, we have hypothesized that non-volatile compounds are involved in the microsite choice and the aggregation process of this beetle. Long chain hydrocarbons were identified inside aggregation sites, comprising saturated and unsaturated homologues. An aggregation bioassay was then conducted on overwintering individuals, highlighting the retention capacity of the previously cited compounds on the tested ladybeetles. Additional investigations have shown that H. axyridis males and females, originating from overwintering sites, deposit a similar blend of molecules while walking. A Y-shaped tube assay revealed that this blend is used by male and female congeners as cue, allowing individuals to orientate towards the treated side of the olfactometer. These results suggest the use of two different blends of long chain hydrocarbons by H. axyridis during its aggregative period, the first one to lead conspecifics towards aggregation sites (microsites) and the second to ensure the cohesion of the aggregation. These findings support the potential use of these blends, in association with volatiles, in the design of traps in order to control infestations of this species in dwellings. [less ▲]

Le doryphore est le plus important défoliateur de pommes de terre. Lors de ces dernières années, une réapparition, certainement liée à l’augmentation des températures sous nos latitudes, a été constatée. Face aux futures restrictions européennes en matière d’insecticides ainsi qu’aux exigences du consommateur, des techniques de lutte plus « vertes » sont à développer. Lors de nos tests en laboratoire, l’utilisation de la larve de la chrysope a permis une réduction efficace des œufs et larves de doryphores. Cela permet donc d’entrevoir une lutte entomophage contre le doryphore via l’utilisation d’un prédateur naturel propre à nos régions. [less ▲]

La coccinelle asiatique, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, importée en Europe de l'Ouest afin de lutter contre les pucerons et les cochenilles, s'y est rapidement acclimatée. Cette espèce exotique est devenue invasive et exerce un impact négatif sur la biodiversité en entrant en prédation intraguilde avec les espèces natives. Afin d'évaluer l'importance de l'invasion de cette espèce exotique, un inventaire des prédateurs de pucerons a été réalisé en 2009 et 2010 au sein de quatre cultures : maïs, froment, pomme de terre et fève des marais, situées dans le Sud de la Belgique. Cinq espèces aphidiphages majoritaires ont été observées; par ordre décroissant d'importance: Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), Chrysoperla carnea sensus lato (Stephens), Coccinella septempunctata (Linné), Harmonia axyridis Pallas et Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (Linné). La coccinelle asiatique ne représente que 8,7 % de tous les prédateurs de pucerons observés et 23,9% de toutes les coccinelles. De plus, elle est deux fois moins abondante que la coccinelle à sept points. Cette espèce invasive n'est donc actuellement pas l'aphidiphage le plus abondant dans les agro-écosystèmes wallons. Interactions between this exotic ladybird and other aphidophagous species present in Belgian agro-ecosystems such as Coccinella septempunctata, Episyrphus balteatus and Chrysoperla carnea are asymmetric to the benefit of H. axyridis. This study focuses on the survival rate of three aphidophagous species Harmonia axyridis (Ha), Coccinella septempunctata (C7) and Episyrphus balteatus (Eb) placed in cages in biological fields of potato and sugar beet. During June and July, hermetic cages were disposed on the crops with 10 larvae (second stage) of each aphidophagous. Four types of cages were observed (1) Ha+Eb+C7+ aphids, (2) Ha+Eb+C7, (3) Eb+C7+ aphids and (4) Eb+C7. Each combination was repeated three times. In sugar beet fields, E. balteatus was the species with the highest mortality rate. The two coccinellid species had a better survival rate than E. balteatus. All aphidophagous species had higher mortality rates in absence of aphids. In potato, when aphids were present in excess, the survival rates of all aphidophagous insects were lower than in sugar beet probably because A. fabae is less adapted to the potato morphology. Nevertheless, we have observed in potato no mortality of C. 7-punctata during all its development cycle. This suggests that (1) C. 7-punctata may use aphids as food sources more efficiently than H. axyridis and (2) that interactions between aphidophagous could be less frequent (difficulty of mobility). In potato and sugar beet, H. axyridis had the longest development cycle, being still at the larval stage when C. 7-punctata and E. balteatus reached the pupae stage. We can suppose that pupae of E. balteatus and C. 7-punctata were an alternative food (intraguild prey) to H. axyridis when aphids were lacking. Pupae are immobile and therefore more sensitive to the attack of predators. [less ▲]

Aphids (Aphis fabae) were added in excess when needed. In sugar beet fields, E. balteatus was the species with the highest mortality rate. In potato, the survival rate of all aphidophagous was lower than sugar beet when aphids were present in excess probably because A. fabae reproduced less in potato. Aphids are major pests of crops worldwide and the use of pesticides has led to resistant populations. The integration of aphid natural enemies in integrated management programs could be an option, but their efficacy is often limited by their quick dispersal from the ecosystem where they are released. Here, using wind-tunnel and field experiments, we have demonstrated that 3-Methyl-2-butenal acts as an efficient attractant and ovipositional stimulant for the hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer) (Diptera: Syrphidae), enhancing its efficiency as biological control agent in crop fields. Wind-tunnel assays allowed determining that a minimal dose of 250 µg of 3-Methyl-2-butenal is required to attract the hoverflies over a distance of 2.5 m while a minimal dose of 500 µg is needed to induce the oviposition. Both attraction and oviposition increased proportionally to the tested doses showing that hoverflies are able to regulate their oviposition according to the chemical stimuli from their environment. In field experiments, both Syrphidae and Chrysopidae were strongly attracted by the 3-Methyl-2-butenal at a dose of 10 mg which also induces the oviposition of these two aphid predators in potato crops. This study also highlighted that hoverflies are the most abundant aphid predators found in natural environment. Against aphids, the use of this semiochemical could certainly enhance the efficiency of natural enemies. The Asian ladybird, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), has been introduced in Western Europe to control aphid and coccid populations in greenhouses. This exotic species rapidly adapted to temperate climatic conditions and invaded all Europe in few years. Now, H. axyridis is causing damages to the ecosystems through e.g. intraguild predation (IGP) with native species. We evaluated, in 2009 and 2010, the occurrence of aphid natural enemies (hoverflies, coccinellids and lacewings) in several agro-ecosystems (corn, wheat, potato, broad bean) in northern Wallonia (Belgium). Five dominating aphidophagous species were observed, in decreasing order of importance: Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), Chrysoperla carnea sensus lato (Stephens), Coccinella septempunctata (Linné), Harmonia axyridis and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (Linné). The Multicolored Asian ladybird represents 8,7% of all observed aphidophagous species and 23,9% of coccinellids. Moreover, H. axyridis occurrence is two-times less important than C. 7-punctata. These results highlight that this invasive species is currently not the most abundant in southern Belgium agro-ecosystems and would not influence other aphid predators in those particular ecosystems. La lutte contre les pucerons de manière biologique consiste entre autre à utiliser des insectes prédateurs de pucerons tels que les coccinelles. En Belgique un des auxiliaires le plus utilisé est la coccinelle à deux points (Adalia bipunctata) mais en 1997, les horticulteurs ont introduit la coccinelle asiatique (Harmonia axyridis) afin de lutter plus efficacement contre les pucerons. Cette coccinelle invasive s'est rapidement répandue dans toute la Belgique et à travers l'Europe. Afin d'évaluer son impact sur l'entomofaune des milieux agricoles, nous avons réalisé un inventaire des aphidiphages présent sur 10 sites réparti en Wallonie. Deux méthodes d'échantillonnage ont été utilisées: (1) l'utilisation de pièges collant et (2) l'observation visuelle dans des quadras d'1m². Après 10 semaines d'inventaire, nous pouvons conclure que pour l'année 2009, la coccinelle asiatique est la coccinelle la plus abondante dans les agro-écosystèmes wallons. Les cultures préférentielles dans lesquelles la coccinelle invasive a été la plus abondante sont la pomme de terre biologique et le maïs. Culture où la quantité de puceron n'est pas forcement la plus élevée. La période de reproduction de la coccinelle asiatique se situe à la mi-juillet, période d'abondance de proies dans les cultures étudiées. [less ▲]
