Set up by the University of Liège, ORBi (Open Repository and Bibliography) knew a lightning increase of the online posted references since its creation in 2008. The official launch took place on November 26th, 2008 and after considerable efforts on behalf of the team which manages the tool, and researchers who introduce themselves their publications, the contents of the repository managed to reach a value of 64245 references among which 38670 with full text. Working for the Library of Geography of the University of Liege, I found interesting to analyze the number of visualizations and downloads of the references (2005 to 2007) posted online by the ULg geographer’s, and the population interested in this literature. The highlight is on WHO and WHERE are the internet users visualizing and downloading ORBi references from? In order to detect the population using this scientific literature, we analyzed the user IP and their distribution in the world. The data was obtained from a MaxMind database. The type of population using this scientific literature: researchers, individuals, public or private companies was also determined. [less ▲]

The decision to build an institutional repository at the University of Liège was taken in 2005. It took 3 years to prepare for a faultless start in November 2008. A strong communication campaign conveyed the Open Access concept to the ULg research community. A name was coined to personalise the concept : ORBi (Open Repository and Bibliography, http://orbi.ulg.ac.be/), suggesting an improved worldwide audience. A special effort in internal communication was devoted to acceptance of the mandate. It appeared essential to make it plain that ORBi would offer an unprecedented increase in readership, but that it would only be valuable if all ULg members would abide by the new rules. Any mandate needs some coercitive persuasion. Rather than resting on advocacy, we linked internal assessment to the scientific production stored in ORBi. Those applying for promotion have no choice but to file all their production in full text. This created waves of progression. Since then, evidence for a much increased readership (about twice, http://opcit.eprints.org/) has transformed the early participants in strong advocates of the repository. 68,000 items have been filed, 41,000 (60,2%) with full text (only mandatory for documents published later that 2002). According to ROAR (http://roar.eprints.org ), out of 1,568 IRs, ORBi comes 27th for the number of references, 15th for « high activity level » and 1st for « medium activity level » (number of days with 10-99 deposits/day). ORBi is now considered a success by almost all ULg members. Its advantages to individual authors have become a better incentive than the mandate itself. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Libraries must sometimes load records that are not available to them in a bibliographic format standard (Marc21, Unimarc...): integration of the book database of an academic research center, list of new e-journals bought by the library... This can make the conversion procedure of the data to the Aleph sequential format quite hard. Sometimes the records are only available in Excel. This poster explains how to convert easily in a few steps an Excel file into Aleph sequential in order to load records with manage-18. Next to this procedure, 'tab_fix' and 'fix_doc_do_file_08' are of course used to correct or complete the data. The strength of that method is that no extra programming is needed! Moreover, a basic knowledge of Excel is enough to understand and use that method. [less ▲]

Although universities are providing more and more information literacy training for their undergraduate students, the students’ real level of information literacy at the beginning of their studies has never been assessed. Hence EduDOC has decided to team up with the CIUF ‘Library’ Commission in order to organize a wide study aiming at objectively describing this initial level of information literacy, at identifying the students’ main weaknesses, as well as allowing instructors to adjust their training on this basis. The questionnaire was based on a similar study carried out in Québec and contains 20 questions grouped in five themes relating to information search steps. It was sent in September 2007 to a random sample of students entering a higher education institution in the French Speaking Community of Belgium for the first time. The students’ rather poor results confirm that organizing an information literacy program is imperative if students are to perform well in their studies. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
