We propose a method for generating all symmetric Dicke states, either in the long-lived internal levels of N massive particles or in the polarization degrees of freedom of photonic qubits, using linear optical tools only. By means of a suitable multiphoton detection technique, erasing Welcher-Weg information, our proposed scheme allows the generation and measurement of an important class of entangled multiqubit states. A method for gaining information about the phonon-number moments and the generalized nonlinear and linear quadratures in the motion of trapped ions (in particular, position and momentum) is proposed, valid inside and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. It is based on the measurement of first time derivatives of electronic populations, evaluated at the motion-probe interaction time tau = 0. In contrast to other state-reconstruction proposals, based on measuring Rabi oscillations or dispersive interactions, the present scheme can be performed resonantly at infinitesimal short motion-probe interaction times, remaining thus insensitive to decoherence processes. One of the goals of the ground-based support program for the COROT and MONS/RÖMER satellite missions is to characterize suitable target stars for the part of the missions dedicated to asteroseismology. We present the detailed abundance analysis of nine of the potential COROT main targets using the semi-automatic software VWA. For two additional COROT targets we could not perform the analysis due to the high rotational velocity of these stars. For five stars with low rotational velocity we have also performed abundance analysis by a classical equivalent width method in order to test the reliability of the VWA software. The agreement between the different methods is good. We find that it is necessary to measure abundances extracted from each line relative to the abundances found from a spectrum of the Sun in order to remove systematic errors. We have constrained the global atmospheric parameters T[SUB]eff[/SUB], log g, and [Fe/H] to within 70-100 K, 0.1-0.2 dex, and 0.1 dex for five stars which are slow rotators (v sin i < 15 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP]). For most of the stars we find good agreement with the parameters found from line depth ratios, H alpha lines, Strömgren indices, previous spectroscopic studies, and also log g determined from the HIPPARCOS parallaxes. For the fast rotators (v sin i > 60 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP]) it is not possible to constrain the atmospheric parameters. Asteroseismology is one of the major important science topics in astrophysics in the coming decade. Several recent breakthroughs have indeed been made in Europe in this field. The observational data will improve significantly in the near future, as upgraded ground-based instruments are being built and two European asteroseismic space missions are planned for launch between 2005 and 2008. They will provide us for the first time with ultra-high-accuracy, high-temporal resoluton data from space for stars other than the Sun. A successful asteroseismic study involves many different steps, from state-of-the-art raw data treatment to theoretical physical modelling of the oscillation frequencies. Our network is set up to meet the needs of combining and exchanging the different expertises of the participating institutes, of training PhD students and of both training and exchanging post-doctoral researchers. This will guarantee the most fruitful and efficient exploitation of the very substantial investments that are being made in Europe in future observations of stellar oscillations, strengthening Europe's leading position in this research field. Also, it will be a test-bed for the development of efficient procedures for collaboration across the internet, involving a vast range of procedures and skills, as well as extensive common use of a broad variety of data. Furthermore, procedures will be incorporated for the joint training of students, which is an essential part of our project. [less ▲]

We present a novel approach for solving numerically one-dimensional scattering problems and apply it for computing the emission probability of an ultracold atom interacting with an arbitrary field mode of a high-Q cavity. Our method is efficient, stable and succeeds when other numerical integration methods fail. It also replaces and improves advantageously the WKB approximation. The cases of sinusoidal, sech2 and Gaussian field modes are studied and compared. Divergences with previous works, where WKB was used, are found. [less ▲]
