One theoretical recommendation to develop sustainable rural tourism is to base its development on the local resources. This should embed the tourist activity to the local society, avoid an easy delocalisation, and help to brand the destination. The Belgian Ardennes is a close recreation spot to Dutch people. The paper examines the local resources that attract Dutch tourists and the way how regional and local authorities deal with this tourist development. Based on key actors’ interviews and on in depth analysis of the promotional material produced both by authorities and commercial companies, the paper underlines seven ways to sell and to consume the Ardennes. Due to the lack of entrepreneurship by locals and because the Dutch tourism enterprises know better the Dutch tourists, these enterprises hold a large share of the tourist activities in the Ardennes. These Dutch investments change the destination as well as the local identity. While at the beginning, the Dutch companies developed a tourism based on nature and rural landscape, they diversified their activities up to offland tourism and the “disneyfication” of the places. If this Belgian case study follows more or less the well known “life cycle tourist destination”, the originality of the paper is to stress the difficulties and the opportunities of authorities to regulate tourism development and to maintain the quality of local resources. The present energy crisis and the awareness of the human impact on climate change have boosted the public debate on the accelerated deployment of renewable energy sources. The objective of this research project is to analyse and assess the landscape capacity and social attitudes towards wind energy parks in Belgium, especially in non-urban and non-industrial sites. This research project starts from the observation that a sustainable production of energy, relying on renewable resources, should go hand in hand with a sustainable societal support for the use of these renewable sources. Experiences from neighbouring countries showed that the societal support depends of the regional landscape capacity and the social attitudes towards wind energy parks. In this research project both quantitative and qualitative research techniques will be used to: (1) measure the landscape capacity in relation to the location of wind energy parks in Belgium, (2) to gain insight in the way attitudes towards wind energy parks are socially constructed and reproduced. Analysing spatial familiarity aims to measure how places included in the life-world and in the cognitive map are familiar. Based on the study of Gale, Golledge, Halperin & Couclelis (1990), this paper explores the spatial familiarity of the inhabitants of two municipalities at the fringe of Liege (Belgium): it questions the links between the cognitive dimensions (visual, nominal, localisation) and themselves and the behavioural dimension (passing). It seeks new relevant places for the population of these urban fringe as well as the favourable factors to a good familiarity of a place. Finally, it scrutinizes the influence of people's mobility – period of residence, commuting to work, modes of transport – on spatial familiarity. [less ▲]

The resources of the rural countryside in Europe are subject to many pressures and the difficulties arising in the rural zones somehow jeopardise the agriculture: agricultural activities is decreasing and farmers are losing importance. These difficulties relate to the pressures exerted on farmers: pressures due to the world competition, to the evolution from the spread of suburbanisation, to the tendency of young people to leave rural life, to transport problems in the rural areas. Farmers are seeking to diversify their activities. One of the solutions claims in many regions, both for the farmers and the regions, aiming to improve the rural economy is the development of agritourism or farm tourism. Agritourism is also seen as a means for rural communities to link producers and consumers again strengthening the social capital. This paper attempts to analyse the diversity of the agritouristic offer (sale of farm products, camping close to the farm, bed and breakfast, farm stays) in Europe by proceeding to an analysis of the different strengths and opportunities but also of the constraints of its development. It proposes to question the necessary links between the agritourism activities and the countryside regarding the landscape quality, the tourism tradition, the traditional farm systems, the accessibility, the regional development policy, and so on. The paper establish a typology of the countryside according to farm tourism, and exploit particularly an in depth analysis of some European areas (the Walloon Region, Slovenia and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg). Due to the recent changes at the world scale like the increase in raw material prices and the awareness of the global warming, several countries experience development of renewable power production. These renewable productions often need a lot of place and they are localized in the countryside. This is the come back of the energy production in the rural system after fifty years of concentration of the production in towns, in nuclear power stations, and in large hydropower units. The paper focuses on the wind energy parks development in Belgium countryside, a high-populated area in northwestern Europe. From the experiences in the neighbouring countries, it transpired that social (residents’ reactions) and environmental (landscape impact) aspects are worthy of attention. The paper presents the results of Lacsawep, a two-year federal research project (www.belspo.be/ssd/), that examines which landscapes are adapted to wind energy in Belgium and how Belgian citizens in different contexts perceive those projects. The attitude toward wind energy parks in Belgium is based on information coming from several levels: the mouth to ear, the municipality’s, communication and project leader’s communication, the regional, national, and international Medias. The citizens difficultly analyse the mishmash of pro- and contra- information. The discourses and the bases of attitudes toward wind energy parks are a complex of physical annoyances, economic arguments, symbolic arguments, and type of decision-making process. Last but not least, these attitudes may change quickly due to the international concerns and the upsurge of wind energy parks. In Belgium, it was noticed that during the research project, the attitude toward wind energy parks changed positively. [less ▲]

Maintaining or strengthening the value of the landscape is quite a new issue for the council boards of Walloon nature park. This issue was reinforced by the 2008 Walloon decree, which requires a landscape charter to each nature park. This new topic poses the Park Council with the question of defining the type of landscape that should be in a nature park in Belgium. Two interesting viewpoints could be that of visual integrity and conformity. The paper questions the notion of “conformity” theoretically and empirically through the analysis of the Attert valley nature park (South Belgium). It analyzes more specifically the conformity with the natural environment and the economic context acknowledging the rule of the semiotic approach and of the management of landscape as an heritage.
