Although considered by some as a less "ecologically suitable" forestry model than "near-natural" stand management, even-aged plantation forest management, with regeneration procedure invo lving clearcutting, creates temporary habitat for many early-successional birds. The present study addresses the question of the conservation value for birds of clearcutting-related open areas in European temperate forest, in the context of a mixed woodland-farmland landscape. The point count technique was used to census the breeding birds on 300 sampling p lots, distributed in the 8 main habitat types of the Ardenne region (Southern Belgium), including agricultural land, edge habitats, closed forest habitats and open areas in forest. Most of these open areas in forest derive from clearcutting practices, rapidly planted with young Norway Spruce (Picea abies). We quantified the conservation value of a given habitat type by using a "conservation value index", integrating the frequency of occurrence of each species in the considered habitat and their conservation status in Europe or in Southern Belgium. Both conservation value index and species richness were higher for edge habitats and open areas in forest, compared to forest interior and agricultural land. Detrended Correspondence Analysis of the plot species lists showed that bird assemblages from open area in forest are not intermediate between forest and agricultural open land, as opposed to external edge habitats. Hence, open areas in forest do not contain bird assemblages composed of forest species mixed with colonizing agricultural species but rather shelter specific bird assemblages. An Indicator Species analysis further emphasized this specificity and identified 7 species, which, in the Ardenne context, form a group of species specific to open areas in forest. Due to major changes of land use in the Ardenne during the 20th century, which leads to a tremendous decrease of moor, heath and fallow land areas, clearcut openings in the plantation forest progressively gained high conservation value at the regional scale. Further studies about habitat requirement of the conservation-interest species inhabiting these open areas is needed, including a better understanding of how early-successional species react to forest planning. If plantation forestry evolves to an uneven-aged and more permanently closed forest, then other options, including semi-natural habitat restoration, are urgently required to save early-successional bird communities. This paper is aiming at presenting the main guidelines of a structured approach to an integrated forest management. Such a type of management that can be defined as being a concerted multipurpose management takes into account numerous objectives that forest should be able to fulfil as well as the opinions of the actors involved in the forestry world. This approach consists of an evaluation and a subsequent multicriteria comparison of possible management alternatives. These management options and the expected consequences of their application on the future forest in terms of structure, composition and ability to meet all the expectations must be analyzed. In this respect scenario modellings are built, using simulations that suppose a good and very large knowledge of species autecology, site quality, level of biological quality. Various criteria and indicators are then used to assess the capacity of each alternative to achieve each defined and concerted objective. This is the starting point for comparisons between the management alternatives, based on the multicriteria decision-making technique, the so called ELECTRE III. This promising method has been tested in the context of a belgian pilot forest covering nearly 800 hectares in which foresters, private and public forest owners, hunters, naturalists, walkers and some other stakeholders are deeply involved. Based on the Belgian soil map at 1/20,000, this digital map of Wallonia (DSMW) is composed of a cartographic database describing the soil characteristics of the region. Tool for a better soil management, this database will be integrated in a geographical information system where the soil layer could be used in relation with information concerning other aspects of land development. The different operations include : map drawing finalization of non edited sheets, creation of an image layer, vectorial capture of source objects, building up of the topology, characterization of the objects, geometrical corrections, creation of a continuous layer (edge-matching), creation of a homogeneous legend, integration in a geodatabase. The DSMW in figures corresponds to : 16,000 km2; 600,000 soil polygons delimited by 15 million intermediate points (vertex); 6,000 pedological symbols; 700MB. The advantages of this computerized cartographic database are continuity, legibility, accessibility and many possibilities of thematic analyses. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In many permanent national forest inventories the sampling units consist of 3–4 concentric circular plots in which only trees belonging to conventionally prefixed classes of diameter are measured. Assessing increment is rather complex because of the modification in plot composition (“shifting” trees) during the growth’s period between successive inventories. The recommended method has been validated in an unevenaged stand of beech and an evenaged stand of spruce. It takes into account different pools of trees. The estimations of two increment types have been calculated using single plots of constant area and concentric plots. No significant difference has been observed in this validation step using computer simulation. [less ▲]

Since 1997 the permanent forest inventory which is conducted in Walloon Region provides much more information than those traditionally related to forest production (growing stock, wooded areas, …). It has progressively moved to a very detailed information system which is one of the main source of data useful to sustainable forest management in terms of : monitoring the development of forest biological diversity, setting up of Natura2000 sites, estimation of carbon stock. The inventory that will be carried out repeatedly (10 000 sampling plots revisited, one tenth per year) can also be considered as a management tool in forest certification. [less ▲]

The inventory technique using visual evaluation is based on a systematic sampling method with a high survey rate (25 to 40%). It is proposed as a promising alternative to complete inventories for the characterisation of mixed broadleaved uneven-aged stands. Trees located within 0.1 ha sampling plots are visually graded into large size categories. Two modalities of this inventory method, using one or two operators (IGVE1 or IGVE2), have been compared with two other methods: the classical complete inventory (CI) and a systematic sampling inventory with girth measurement (SIGM). The calculations are based upon experimentations carried out in a coppice with standards. No significant difference has been detected between IGVE1, IGVE2 and the complete inventory, concerning number of trees and basal area estimations, considered globally or by girth classes. However, IGVE1 compared with SIGM, provides a slight, but significant, underestimation (5%) of the number of trees. This is mainly observed in the sampling units comprising a high number of small trees. Nevertheless, inventory method with girth visual evaluation can be considered as a very useful tool for the description of unevenaged mixed broadleaved stands, namely during the stage of analysis of management plans. Furthermore other information useful for the preliminary phase of a forest management (description of regeneration, health status of trees, …) can also be collected during the same inventory, and a thematic mapping of the results is possible at the stand level. Site index curves were developed for Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. in southern Belgium. Five models of Duplat and Tran-Ha were fitted to a data set of 15 stem analyses divided into two data subsets clearly characterized by different height growth patterns. Model III was found to fit data sets best, both separately and combined. Various statistical comparisons made between the two curve sets underline shape variations corresponding to different soil conditions. A comparison between Belgian and other European curves highlights the effect of the soil on growth curve shape, which is at least as important as that of climatic factors. However, for practical reasons, the use of a general global model, which does not specifically take into account differences in height growth patterns, is satisfactory for productivity evaluation and is recommended for forest management. An investigation relative to Walloon private forest owners was carried out in order to characterise their properties and the management undergone in each one of them, as well as to identify the main problems the owners encounter. The results of this study emphasise on the existence of multiple aspects of owners and of their properties. The majority of the Walloon private properties represent above all an important inheritance along with a strong sentimental attachment in regards to the owner. A high proportion of owners manage their forest themselves by devoting a lot of time, but without necessarily planning management. This study clearly shows that a large number of owners wish to be more informed and guided. [less ▲]
