[more ▼] A new quaternary indole alkaloid: 10-hydroxy-Nb-methyl-corynantheol has been isolated from the stem bark of Strychnos usambarensis by High Speed Counter Current Chromatography (HSCCC). Its IUPAC name is 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-vinyl-5-methyl-1,2,3,4,6,7,12,12b-octahydro-indolo quinolizinium-9-ol. The structure was established by spectral (UV,IR,EIMS and NMR data) and chemical methods. The stereochemistry was proposedo n the basis of CD curve, NMR studies and biogenetic hypothesis. [more ▼] High Speed Counter Current Chromatography (HSCCC) has been used to isolate and purify two quaternary alkaloids from a sample of curare prepared by the Panare Indians of Estado Bolivar, Venezuela. One of the compounds is the known base Macusine B. The other one is a new but related base named panarine. Its structure has been established unequivocally by spectral and X-ray cristallographic analysis.
