To optimise the science results of the asteroseismic part of the CoRoT satellite mission a complementary simultaneous ground-based observational campaign is organised for selected CoRoT targets. The observations include both high-resolution spectroscopic and multicolour photometric data. We present the preliminary results of the analysis of the ground-based observations of three targets. A line-profile analysis of 216 high-resolution FEROS spectra of the δ Sct star HD 50844 reveals more than ten pulsation frequencies in the frequency range 5-18 d[SUP]-1[/SUP], including possibly one radial fundamental mode (6.92 d[SUP]-1[/SUP]). Based on more than 600 multi-colour photometric datapoints of the β Cep star HD 180642, spanning about three years and obtained with different telescopes and different instruments, we confirm the presence of a dominant radial mode ν[SUB]1[/SUB] = 5.48695 d[SUP]-1[/SUP], and detect also its first two harmonics. We find evidence for a second mode ν[SUB]2[/SUB] = 0.3017 d[SUP]-1[/SUP], possibly a g-mode, and indications for two more frequencies in the 7-8 d[SUP]-1[/SUP] domain. From Stromgren photometry we find evidence for the hybrid 5 Sct/γ Dor character of the F0 star HD 44195, as frequencies near 3 d[SUP]-1[/SUP] and 21 d[SUP]-1[/SUP] are detected simultaneously in the different filters. We present the preliminary results of a detailed study of ground-based photometric and spectroscopic observations dedicated to the β Cephei CoRoT main target HD 180642. Besides the non-linear dominant radial mode several low-amplitude modes are detected in both kinds of datasets. Our aim is to derive the wavenumbers (ℓ,m) of these modes, as additional constraints to the CoRoT pulsation frequencies, for forthcoming asteroseismic modelling of the star. [less ▲]

Oscillations of gamma Dor-type were discovered in the star HD 218427 through simultaneous uvby photometric observations carried out in the year 2003. A few Hbeta-Crawford measurements were also collected for calibration purposes and they locate this star well inside the gamma Dor instability region. We find HD 218427 to be deficient in metals, similar to other well-defined gamma Dor stars, and discuss the possibility that it has a lambda Boo nature. We carried out frequency analysis for different filters, including the combined "vby" filter, and five frequencies were found as significant with periods ranging between 0.3 and 0.8 days. The recently-developed frequency ratio method is used in order to identify the excited modes. The results are consistent with an l=2 identification for all the modes and with high radial quantum numbers (nË 40) for the three main observed periodicities. The possibility of multiplet structures is also discussed. However, no consistency is found when using the time-dependent convection treatment to discriminate modes. This disagreement can be due to the large rotation velocity taking place in HD 218427 and, consequently, the significant coupling between the modes. [less ▲]

We present the case for a mission concept that will clarify these problems and give us a global view of the evolution of combined star and planetary systems. This will be achieved by simultaneously addressing the search for planetary transits in front of a large number of stars, including many nearby stars, the study of their internal structure and evolution via asteroseismology, and that of their magnetic activity, via UV monitoring. Space experiments which are aiming towards asteroseismology and the detection of exoplanets, like COROT or MOST, Eddington and Kepler, are designed to deliver high precision photometric data. Obviously, they can be used also for other purposes than the primary science goals and in addition many other targets can or will be automatically observed simultaneously with the primary targets. As a consequence, fascinating possibilities for additional (parallel, secondary) science projects emerge. For COROT a dedicated working group was thus established with the goal to contribute any useful information which may optimize the scientific output of the mission. [less ▲]
