The purpose of this paper is to provide for both life and non-life insurance an assessment of the relative productive performance of French companies. We use parametric and nonparametric approaches to construct a frontier to be used as a yardstick of productive efficiency. Our data basis covers 84 life and 243 non-life companies for the period 1984-1989. The main findings show a high correlation between parametric and nonparametric results and a wide dispersion in the rates of inefficiency across companies. This dispersion can be reduced when controlling for variations in scale, ownership, distribution, reinsurance, and claims ratios. [less ▲]

This paper presents new estimates of technical efficiency and multi-factor productivity growth for the OECD financial services (banking and insurance) sector, over the period 1971-86. In addition, it provides tests of two conjectures: can we talk of convergence in productivity growth across OECD members, particularly EC countries, and to what extent can prevailing competition explain variation in efficiency and productivity growth? This paper studies the effects of variables pertaining to alternative bequest motives on the composition of households' portofolio. It relies on a 1986 survey on the assets structure of 5600 French households. The main conclusion is that bequest motives indeed influence the composition of households' wealth. However, available data does not allow one to sort out the influence of specific models of inheritance. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The purpose of this paper is to provide for both life and non life insurance a measurement of economies of scale and an assessment of productive performance of French companies. We use a translog cost function to check the presence of scale economies and a parametric approach to construct our yardstick of productive efficiency. Our panel data covers 84 life and 243 non life companies for the period 1984–89. The main findings indicate both the existence of increasing returns to scale and a wide dispersion in the rates of inefficiency across companies. Those two results are shown to be closely linked to a number of characteristics of the companies studied, particularly their institutional form. [less ▲]
