Using water resources for hydro-electricity production influences and limits the quality and quantity of habitat available for use by resident fishes. Changes in the fish community structure after setting minimum flow conditions have been more frequently studied than the behavioural adaptations of fish living in the vicinity of the disturbed river section. In the River Amblève (River Meuse basin, Belgium), a hydraulic power plant bypasses the river over a length of 10 km. Adult nase Chondrostoma nasus (n=10) and barbel Barbus barbus (n=8) were captured in the restitution zone of the turbinated flow several weeks before their reproduction periods. They were equipped with implant radio transmitters and manually and intensively tracked over several months to more than 1 year. The environmental conditions (water temperature and flow) as well as the geomorphology of the river were compared in both natural and flow-regulated sections. Nase and barbel demonstrated the capacity to map their contrasted environment and adapted their space and habitat utilisation as well as the choice of their spawning sites in relation with their specific biological characteristics and the environmental variations. The results are discussed in the context of the management of fish movements in flow-regulated rivers. [less ▲]

Adult roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) (N = 24; 19.9-36.1 cm FL) from three highly fragmented Belgian rivers were tagged with surgically implanted radio transmitters. Their seasonal movements were observed from March to August 2004 (circum reproduction period) in river stretches delimited by two physical barriers. In the three rivers, roach displayed similar patterns of movements which were mainly influenced by the date of observation (movements increased in late April-May) and water temperature (travel distances were more important when water temperature ranged between 10 degrees C and 14 degrees C). Roach sometimes cleared physical obstacles. The mean distances travelled in each river were relatively short (max. 2.5 km) and mainly influenced by the length of the study reach, which was delimited by physical barriers. [less ▲]

Depuis 1988, le Ministère de la Région wallonne (MRW), Direction Générale des Ressources Naturelles et de l'Environnement (DGRNE), Direction des Cours d'Eau non navigables (DCENN) fait procéder à un inventaire complet des obstacles physiques potentiels à la libre circulation des poissons dans les cours d'eau des bassins hydrographiques de la Meuse, du Rhin et partiellement de l'Escaut. Cette mission est assurée par une équipe de la Fédération des Sociétés de Pêche de l'Est et du Sud de la Belgique (FSPESB) qui a déjà couvert un vaste domaine hydrogéographique . Complémentairement à cet inventaire sur le terrain, la DCENN a chargé le LDPH-ULg de réaliser des études visant à caractériser, notamment par biotélémétrie, la franchissabilité effective de divers types d'obstacles, d'évaluer l'efficacité de certaines échelles à poissons construites sur des cours d'eau non navigables et, de manière générale, de rassembler un maximum d'informations sur l'évolution des connaissances et des techniques en matière de rétablissement de la libre circulation des poissons en rivière (Ovidio et al., 2005 & 2007). Ces différentes approches centrées sur les cours d'eau non navigables sont aussi développées par le LDPH sur les cours d'eau navigables à travers le suivi scientifique du programme Saumon Meuse (MRW, 2007) et l'exécution du volet ULg du programme Fédéral 2003-2006 FISHGUARD (Blust et De Boeck, 2003 ; De Boeck et al., 2006). L’approche du problème de la libre circulation des poissons en rivière se situe dans un contexte régional (Nouveau Code wallon de l'Eau),mais aussi international : Décision Benelux d'avril 1996 (Benelux, 1996-1999), Plans d'Action Meuse de la Commission Internationale de la Meuse-CIM (CIM, 2001 et 2002), Implications de la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau quant à la qualité écologique des eaux de surface (Guyon et al., 2006), Perspective de plans d’actions pour le sauvetage de l’anguille européenne (Belpaire, 2005). Vu l'état actuel d'avancement de toutes les études et actions menées en Région wallonne en cette matière, nous proposons dans le présent dossier de synthèse une analyse des options de gestion applicables aux espèces de poissons les plus concernées de notre ichtyofaune ainsi qu'une sélection des aménagements à évaluer en vue d’une amélioration et/ou à réaliser en priorité en fonction de différents critères. Between 1996 and 2004, adult brown trout, Salmo trutta L. (n = 40) and European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.) (n = 39) were radio-tracked in three southern Belgium rivers to assess their capabilities to bypass various obstacles. During their upstream migrations individuals encountered different types of physical obstacles and successfully passed some under variable environmental conditions. The obstacles cleared by the fish were characterised based on a simple topographical description protocol and compared with tracking data. The ability of trout and grayling to pass different typologies of physical obstacles in natural river systems is discussed in the context of enabling their free movement in rivers. [less ▲]

This study performed in the Patapedia River (Quebec, Gaspesie) was designed to examine the space utilization and mobility patterns of individual Atlantic salmon parr over short time scales with frequent detections of position. In August 2004, n = 7 radio-tagged Atlantic salmon parr were located every 20 min during 10 tracking periods chosen to take into account the dawn, day, dusk and night periods. Parr showed important inter individual variability in space utilization and mobility patterns, occupying large home ranges (123 to 5602 m(2)) and sometimes migrating 2 km upstream in the river. No differences were observed in the mean distance travelled among the four daily periods by individual fish, but the estimated home ranges utilized during the four daily periods overlapped only partially, demonstrating that parr partly occupy different areas of the river during different parts of the daily cycle. The results suggest that an intense survey on a small number of fish may contribute to a complementary comprehension of space utilization and mobility patterns of Atlantic salmon parr when viewed in association with results from studies surveying larger number of fish at lower frequency. Ce rapport présente une partie des résultats des recherches menées dans le cadre d’une convention d’études 2005-2007 entre le Ministère de la Région Wallonne (Division de l’Eau, Direction des Cours d’Eau Non Navigables) et l’Université de Liège (Laboratoire de Démographie des Poissons et d’Hydroécologie, Unité de Biologie du Comportement). L’objet particulier de la recherche évoquée est le suivi biologique de la population piscicole de la Lhomme à Poix Saint-Hubert après la construction et la mise en service en fin 2002 d’une microcentrale hydroélectrique par la société S.A. Hydroval. La réalisation de cette étude correspond à une étude d’impact a posteriori, dont la réalisation conditionnait l’octroi du permis d’exploitation. Cette recherche très ciblée est une composante d’une convention d’études générale intitulée « Définition de bases biologiques et éco-hydrauliques pour la libre circulation des poissons dans les cours d'eau non navigables de Wallonie ». The disruption of longitudinal river connectivity by man-made obstacles and the stocking of fish communities with non-indigenous species or genotypes threaten the fish fauna of Belgian rivers to various extents. Obstacles impede migrations between habitats that are vital for populations, and they may restrict the gene flow between populations, thereby reducing the effective size and genetic diversity of populations and increasing the risk of local extinction. Restocking programs often involve the introduction of non-indigenous genotypes in native populations. Moreover, although stocking programs lead to the temporal and superficial enrichment of local fish communities or gene pools, they generally result in a loss of biodiversity on a regional or international scale through the homogenisation of communities and the breakdown of genetic differentiation between populations. Thus, stocking programs cannot compensate for the loss of free migration by artificial obstructions. The impact of these changes on fish populations remains largely unknown, which complicates the priorisation of spots to preserve and spots to restore. Here, we present an integrated study on Belgian waters, both in Flanders and Wallonia, which analyses fish communities, gene flow and migration patterns in the field, as well as the swimming and leaping performances of fishes under controlled conditions. Using manual acoustic tracking our study quantified (1) the spatial distribution (2) the movement patterns and (3) the depth preference of adult whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus in it small artificial lake of eastern Belgium were the species was introduced in 1978 for recreational fishing. From June to October 2004, n=6 C. lavaretus (LF 285-519 mm) were tracked (pingers and depth sensor transmitters) from a small boat over periods ranging from 98 to 108 days in Robertville Lake (elevation: 490 m; area: 63 ha max. depth: 47 in). Whitefish were consistently mobile but showed quite variable lake use patterns. Two individuals traveled the entire length and breadth of the lake, whereas others remained in movement in the deep zone in the middle part of the lake or near the retaining darn wall. Whitefish occupied positions in the water column ranging front 2.6 to 27.0 m (mean 12.7 +/- 5.6 m) that varied depending on individuals. This first study on individual whitefish behaviour provides a better understanding of the behavioural ecology of the species in small artificial lake. [less ▲]
