Recent excavations at the cave site of Trou al'Wesse (Modave, Belgium) have yielded significant new data concerning the Mesolithic occupations at the site that contribute to the understanding of the chronology and environmental context of the Belgian Mesolithic. We present the results of the analyses of lithic and faunal assemblages, site taphonomy and spatial distribution, and discuss the relationship of the site with other Mesolithic sites in Belgium. Excavations of the Holocene sequence at Trou Al'Wesse have yielded new elements related to Mesolithic occupations, in particular a human right mandible and a red deer antler hammer, as well as a possible Neolithic posthole. This article presents geological, archaeological and paleoanthropological data obtained during the 2010 season. [less ▲]

On the terrace of the site of Trou Al'Wesse, commun of Modave (province of Liège, Belgium), stratum 4b-δ, excavated in 2008, has been attributed to the Late Mesolithic. Ceramic sherds of La Hoguette type have been recovered from near the top of this Mesolithic context, which contains lithic artifacts, a charcoal lens, wild fauna including an aurochs astragalus with cutmarks, and a sawn red deer crown antler. LBK sherds of the type found in overlying stratum 4a, are absent in facies 4b-δ. This is the first time that La Hoguette sherds have been found instratified context associated with material that can be radiometrically dated, and also the first time that such sherds have been discovered south of the Meuse and Sambre in Belgium. New dates from this stratum contribute to placing these sherds and the other elements in chronological context. [less ▲]

This paper presents the Belgian Magdalenian from the perspective of recent results from the cave site of Trou Da Somme, placing it in relation to the other known Belgian Magdalenian sites, including caves in Middle Belgium (Chaleux, Bois Laiterie, Goyet, etc.) and open-air sites in Flanders (Orp, Kanne). Emphasis is placed on site function, chronology and lithic raw material procurement. Additionally, an engraved plaquette found at Trou Da Somme will be discussed. [less ▲]

Ongoing excavations on the terrace of the cave site of Trou Al’Wesse (Modave, Belgium) have yielded evidence from a stratified sequence dating from the end of the Early Mesolithic to the Early Neolithic. Stratum 4b is divided into a series of laterally superimposed facies ( - ), each of which contains palimpsests of lithics and fauna. The oldest facies ( ) has been dated to 9000±40 BP (Beta-209871) and the most recent ( ) to 6650±70 BP (Lv-1751). These dates demonstrate the regular re-occupation of the site during the Early and Late Mesolithic, with a significant occupational hiatus during the Middle Mesolithic. Isolated human remains include a cranial fragment dated to 6540±45 BP (OxA-10561) and a deciduous incisor. The interdisciplinary project integrates geological, archaeological and environmental data to address hypotheses related to continuity and change across the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and human response to changing environmental conditions, change during the Mesolithic period, and the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. Two significant discoveries are presented: the first bone tools discovered in stratigraphic context (a point dating to the EUP) and two ungulate bone fragments with cutmarks (Mousterian). [less ▲]

This article presents the results analyses of the archaeological and faunal assemblages from the Holocene strata at Trou Al'Wesse (Modave, Liège Province, Belgium). Two strata of human occupation are present in this sequence: the Early Neolithic in stratum 4.1 and the Late Mesolithic in stratum 4.2. The archaeological material includes lithics and ceramics. Faunal analysis of sample column K4 was done for paleoecological and taphonomic analysis of strata 4 and 12. [less ▲]
