The aim of this article is to define the perception of the images of Liège town centre and to find the factors which explain the differences between these images. It is based on an extensive survey carried out in 1978, in 7 different places, with 1 552 people, and continues research work done in 1974. The steps : the integration or rejection of the town centre of places situated in a marginal position in relation to the centre, the delimiting of this centre, the laying down of the advantages and drawbacks of the centre and the choice of a central point. In the last twenty years there have been important modifi¬cations in the localisation of industries due to technical, economic and social mutations which have completely changed the world. In most indus¬trialised countries many old sites have been abandoned whereas new industrial zones are multiplying whether in city suburbs or in harbour regions. Furthermore, recent evolution is characterized by an industrial shift towards underdeveloped countries. This tendency would seem to be increasing and leading to reassessment of the traditional balance of world economy. What are the causes and consequences of these changes and how should this new geography be understood? [less ▲]

This article deals with recent developments of urbanized space in Belgium. Using data on industry, arterial roads and housing, it tries to es-timate the. true impact of these different activities and to set out the es-sential part played by the types of spatial organizations. II also introduces a fundamental consideration which should serve a more efficient policy for town and country planning. [less ▲]

This work has two aims: on the one hand, to define and explain the movement of spatial emigration of the clothing and ready-made industry in Belgian Limburg since 1960 and, on the other hand, to try and estimate the impact of a new activity in an environment which is traditionally not very industrial. The survey is based on the use of an original card-index of all the firms which existed or still exist in 1978 in the province and which at any one time employed at least ten workers. With this data it is possible to translate the true dynamics of the evolution of the implantations and to analyse the process of their localization very carefully. [less ▲]

The problem of a company's choice of a precise location has for a long time preoccupied researchers. Traditionally, any analysis of localisation was based on diagrammatic frameworks built up from a basis of rational decisions which maximised profits and minimised costs. For several years now research has tended more towards analysing management behaviour and studying the actual process of decision. Founded on better social bases, a new school of thought has emerged. It recognizes that motivations are not always rational, that decisions are conditioned by the management's perceptions and that they are related to the amount of information taken into consideration at the time of the choice. Not only are the economical factors analysed but also the influence of preferences and the spatial images¡ Confined for many years to statistical surveys and to very detailed descriptions of regions or activities, industrial geography is now participating actively in this renewal of research. French-speaking geographers are, however, not often very familiar with this type of research. We, therefore, considered it useful to attempt a synthesis of the problem by examining, first of all, the traditional diagrammatic frameworks of localisation and then the studies of industrial' behaviour. The structural and spatial changes recorded in Wallonia since World War II have brought about the abandonment of many sites of Importance to the economy. In spite of their spatial size and a greater awareness of the problems of area planning and development, not much is know about these sites and very litte research work has been done to date. The object of this article is to outline the issue as it now stands (number of sites, regional distribution, proposals and measures for revival) and to introduce some new research work. [less ▲]

The aim of the work is twofold : to give the main intrinsic characterictics of self-service supermarkets and hypermarkets in the region of Liège and to examine their spatial insertion in the heart of this built-up area. Based on very precise surveys, it also tries to improve the methods used to study supermarkets and hypermarkets by putting forward new criteria and by perfecting certain types of analysis. Not only does it emphasize the big quantitative and qualitative features of these sales points but it also stresses the problem of localisation which is dealt with from three different points of view : structuration of the agglomeration, areas of insertion and accessibility by road and by bus. Since 1960 marked changes have affected peripheral distribution in Europe. These modifications are due to the increase of new formulas such as superettes, supermarkets, food discount stores, hypermarkets, large specialised stores and shopping centres. In this article, we have tried to set out the main characteristics of these shops and compare their development in each country. We have furthermore tried to define the commercial and spatial repercussions of these complexes which, accordingly, have again brought up the problem of urbanistic and socio¬economic integration of large shopping stores in the periphery. The new industrial sites in Belgium.- A new formula which complies with both national town and country planning and regional development, the industrial zones and estates have had a profond influence on the distribu¬tion of the location of new sites in Belgium territory. A critical study of the location and occupations of these new sites makes it possible to weigh up the recent changes which have happened in the industrial geography of Belgium and to suggest certain modifications with a view to a more balanced distribution of the sites and a more rational, utilisation of the ground. The report first analyses the causes and consequences of the recent de-urbanisation of industrial activities. On account of the problems created by this movement, the survey then puts forward new solutions that aim for a better integration of industrial concerns. These proposals deal mainly with the types of industries that should be maintained or established as well as the terms and conditions of integration. In this connection, it seems impera¬tive to work out a new planning policy for urban space where the renovated secondary sector would find its place due to new formulas such as vertical industrial structures, individual buildings with an urbanised facade and small industrial estates. The aim of the study is to present the various aspects of the problem of parking in the town centre of Liège and for the different districts. The study is based on surveys carried out in all the streets of the town centre. As these surveys were very precise, we have been able to, on one hand, measure availability and, on the other hand, occupancy on a working day (a Tuesday) and on a Saturday. The analysis of the results by district is particularly interesting because of the very distinct oppositions that appear in this case. Furthermore, this study opens the way to concrete proposals for planning and development. [less ▲]
