This article tends to compare several sectors for pedestrians in the cities of Belgium as well as France. In general, their businesses structures differ in function of the neighborhoods or sites selected for the landmark of a pedestrian. Thus, three types of sectors for pedestrians can be characterized : businessman's site, the old neighborhoord in process of destruction (historical entity) and the neighborhood with attractions and restaurants. In fact, the presence of pedestrian in a street or a neighborhood may precipitate a decline in business flourishment by a combination in a reduction of access in the premises (elimination of small businesses selling heavy materials and/or those occupy a large place and those which are involved in frequent deliveries) and an uprising in rents (minimization of businesses selling certain products which are not essential and/or at a fix price). This article attempts to draw up a balance sheet of the steel industry in Liege at the end of 1981. It first describes the factories in Liege: their origin, their evolution since 1945 and their site and condition. It then tries to define the difficulties and handicaps faced by Cockerill S.A. in the present crisis : a limited home market, international competition, the depreciation and scattered locations of the installations, the financial and managerial problems, the cost of salaries and wages and the social climate. It finally deals with the financial, technical and social changes in progress in order to make it understood how important the changes are for the future of the company and the region. [less ▲]

The first part of the article gives the main results of a survey carried out with 600 children in the 5th and 6th classes of primary schools in the region of Liege. The aim of the survey was to get a better idea of how a child perceives his neighbourhood and how he would like to see it arranged. Due to the variety of questions put forward and to the choice of schools in areas of varied social and economic characteristics, it has been possible to come up with a precise conclusion as to the points considered pleasant or unpleasant as well as the main desires regarding planning and development and to examine these results by area. As we believe that there is much to be gained from a survey on the perception of space in relation to a course on the study of environment, in the second part of the article we propose a new methodology which covers, in succession, lived and perceived space, given and reasoned space, and volontary space. The aim of this article is to distinguish the principal changes which have affected Belgian industry since 1970 - changes in structure, on one hand, and in localisation, on the other. When examining the available data, four main facts seem to emerge : the distinct fall in employment in most branches, the difficulties in maintaining the fields most threatened by foreign competition, the problems in developing regions where declining industries are concentrated and the very dear impact of industrial zones in new localisations. The aim of this article is to define the perception of the images of Liège town centre and to find the factors which explain the differences between these images. It is based on an extensive survey carried out in 1978, in 7 different places, with 1 552 people, and continues research work done in 1974. The steps : the integration or rejection of the town centre of places situated in a marginal position in relation to the centre, the delimiting of this centre, the laying down of the advantages and drawbacks of the centre and the choice of a central point. In the last twenty years there have been important modifi¬cations in the localisation of industries due to technical, economic and social mutations which have completely changed the world. In most indus¬trialised countries many old sites have been abandoned whereas new industrial zones are multiplying whether in city suburbs or in harbour regions. Furthermore, recent evolution is characterized by an industrial shift towards underdeveloped countries. This tendency would seem to be increasing and leading to reassessment of the traditional balance of world economy. What are the causes and consequences of these changes and how should this new geography be understood? [less ▲]

Using data on industry, arterial roads and housing, it tries to es-timate the. true impact of these different activities and to set out the es-sential part played by the types of spatial organizations. This work has two aims: on the one hand, to define and explain the movement of spatial emigration of the clothing and ready-made industry in Belgian Limburg since 1960 and, on the other hand, to try and estimate the impact of a new activity in an environment which is traditionally not very industrial. The survey is based on the use of an original card-index of all the firms which existed or still exist in 1978 in the province and which at any one time employed at least ten workers. With this data it is possible to translate the true dynamics of the evolution of the implantations and to analyse the process of their localization very carefully. [less ▲]

The problem of a company's choice of a precise location has for a long time preoccupied researchers. Traditionally, any analysis of localisation was based on diagrammatic frameworks built up from a basis of rational decisions which maximised profits and minimised costs. For several years now research has tended more towards analysing management behaviour and studying the actual process of decision. Founded on better social bases, a new school of thought has emerged. It recognizes that motivations are not always rational, that decisions are conditioned by the management's perceptions and that they are related to the amount of information taken into consideration at the time of the choice. Not only are the economical factors analysed but also the influence of preferences and the spatial images¡ Confined for many years to statistical surveys and to very detailed descriptions of regions or activities, industrial geography is now participating actively in this renewal of research. French-speaking geographers are, however, not often very familiar with this type of research. We, therefore, considered it useful to attempt a synthesis of the problem by examining, first of all, the traditional diagrammatic frameworks of localisation and then the studies of industrial' behaviour. The structural and spatial changes recorded in Wallonia since World War II have brought about the abandonment of many sites of Importance to the economy. In spite of their spatial size and a greater awareness of the problems of area planning and development, not much is know about these sites and very litte research work has been done to date. The object of this article is to outline the issue as it now stands (number of sites, regional distribution, proposals and measures for revival) and to introduce some new research work. [less ▲]
