Teaching cooperation-related issues to AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) students is a major stake nowadays. There are many reasons for that: construction projects become more and more complex and cooperation practices are evolving in both organizational and IT-based ways. It is notably for these reasons that the issue of IT is addressed in most of the AEC-oriented schools and universities. Traditionally IT is taught to support the tasks of each specific construction field (e.g. CAD for architects, simulation tools for static engineers etc.). The Digital Cooperative Studio, presented in this article, considers IT as a support to cooperation and especially its communication and coordination dimensions. Moreover, we describe here a living lab involving students, teachers and researchers. This strong link between research and teaching allows both the students to be “analysts” of their real project situations and the researchers to experiment their development in real project situations. This paper is interested in the extent to which sketches and 3D representations are important in today's design process, particularly during the preliminary creative phases of product design. We question the relevance of sketches within systems of external representations and amongst the infinite possibilities offered by CAD tools. This exploratory research is conducted through 3 steps: an information gathering step where we assess the current state of art, a direct contact with designers through interviews and the testing of the existing theories through pragmatic experimentation. The project’s goal is to objectivize a Human Machine Interaction that could effectively and efficiently support the product designers in their creative phases. [less ▲]

This article examines the usefulness and impact of a new generation of sketch-based environments on the preliminary or conceptual stages of architectural design. It also contemplates new directions in the field of digital sketch interpretation, particularly in architecture. Our qualitative and exploratory study compares three different forms of preliminary architectural design activities: one architecture student in a conventional pencil and paper situation, and two other architecture students using different versions of EsQUIsE software on a Virtual Desktop. Our observations lead to three major conclusions: (1) An automatically generated 3D model is a useful feature for checking the volumes of a planned building. (2) In spite of imposing some limits, the EsQUIsE environment enables the user to make modifications in the nature of architectural representations. (3) Several “superposition design” approaches exist, partly structured by the design environment. [less ▲]

This article is the synthesis of the ICC research project, aiming at the development of a multimodal and portable interface supporting in real time scale setting of an architectural measurement sketch. Based on a participative process, we first expose and make a model of the traditional activities of measure taking and scale setting. We then describe the ICC software and show how the retooled activity changes, taking into account the help functions it brings. We describe the new structure of measurement activity with scale setting, the new drawing modes it induces. We conclude proposing some tracks for the software improvement. [less ▲]

Nous montrons ensuite l'intérêt à considérer cette production graphique spécifique comme un mode d'interface privilégié avec le monde numérique en conception. Le logiciel prototype IC&C - Interaction par Croquis de Composition - est ensuite succinctement décrit pour démontrer l'innovation et la pertinence de ce concept et montrer son niveau d'opérabilité actuel en DAO architecturale. The goal of this research is to propose an integrated approach to incorporate structural engineering concerns into architectural schematic designs for timely and well-informed decision making. This is done through a platform that is based on two software prototypes, EsQUIsE for capturing and interpreting architectural sketches, and StAr for assisting engineers during conceptual structural design. An integrated information model is provided for communication. Given the dissimilar “quality” of the information managed by both prototypes, sketch interpretation mechanisms are also required to “tune-up” communications for bringing the sketch to a precise structural engineering definition. As a result, the engineer can propose feasible structural systems earlier than usual. [less ▲]

Many CAD tools already allow to design and directly manipulate ideas in a digital way. However, designers still use pen and paper during the early design phase of their projects. Indeed, existing CAD tools constraint creative work. There is a need for a spontaneous human computer interaction in design computing. In order to answer to this need, we develop an integrated aided design tool based on a Virtual Desktop. The designer sits in front of a classical desk where s/he can design and manipulate drawings and generated models. This paper describes the observations made during experiment about Virtual Desktop’s use by a designer. The experiment demonstrates that the immersive aspect of our system interface modifies the relationship between the designer and his/her model and, by the way, how this relation generates a new type of augmented interaction.
