CIMEDE is a wooden industrialized building system focused on modularity, sustainability and cost effectiveness. This paper presents an applied research project focused on the implementation of software able to efficiently assist the various stakeholders involved in the design and the construction of CIMEDE housings (architects, clients, process managers, builders, factory workers...). The main objective is to develop an easy to use and bespoke 3D CAD modeler addressing the multiple stakeholder’s needs, and able to integrate the whole complex process of industrialization. [less ▲]

In this chapter, we are interested in studying the use of the graphical modality (digital sketch and document annotations) as a tool for collective design and remote communication. This study takes place in the framework of a 3 months long collaborative architectural design studio, gathering students from Belgium and France to remotely work together in 3 small groups. The study focuses on the role of the graphical modality inside synchronous remote meetings supported by the Distributed Collaborative Design Studio (DCDS). The DCDS enables multi- modal real-time remote exchanges, and aims at remotely re-creating the conditions of co-present meetings. This environment associates a videoconference tool (sup- porting verbal and non-verbal communication) and an original real-time shared digital hand-drawn sketches system (supporting graphical communication). We identify the types of digital annotations made on the imported document (thanks to the electronic pen), as well as their role in the cognitive design processes and in the collaborative and communication processes. We also identify the different practices of digital sketching, in regard to each group and its collaborative strate- gies. We discuss the utility of the graphical modality as an efficient support for collaborative synchronous activities and show that the DCDS environment sup- ports different strategies of collaborative design (co-design and distributed de- sign). We conclude on recommendations for improving the system and for design- ing sketch-based collaborative environments. [less ▲]

Ce chapitre est consacré à la présentation d'une unité de recherche universitaire originale, appelée le LUCID, créé en 2001 à l'Université de Liège (Belgique). Elle figure ici comme une expérience partagée, créée autour de la notion d'innovation et menée avec une approche pluridisciplinaire centrée utilisateur et articulée autour des nouvelles technologies. Dès sa fondation, cette petite structure, très dynamique, a développé un savoir-faire spécifique, rapidement remarqué dans le domaine de l'ingénierie de conception, qui lui vaut d'être régulièrement citée et appelée à participer à des projets innovants. Parallèlement à ses projets, elle conduit une réflexion sur ses propres processus de création qu'elle cherche sans cesse à maîtriser et à diversifier. A l'invitation de l'Institut de l'Innovation INNOVACS de Grenoble, c'est une synthèse de cette analyse qui est proposée ici dans une perspective pratique, pas nécessairement reproductible mais potentiellement porteuse pour celles et ceux qui s'interrogent sur les méthodes opérationnelles de gestion de l'innovation. Ce chapitre est articulé en trois parties. Il présente d'abord l'équipe et quelques-uns de ses projets; il montre ensuite comment elle s'est organisée en termes de ressources humaines et logistiques; enfin, il propose une analyse rétroactive, permettant d'inspirer éventuellement d'autres contextes. In the areas of design, especially in architectural design, collaboration has become an important challenge. The specialization of skills increase, work teams are more and more extensive and the geographic distance between them increases too. The economic and ecological stakes related to remote collaboration are an evidence. This context involves the need to support most efficiently possible remote working meetings. We present the Distributed Collaborative Digital Studio (DSDC), a tool designed to recreate, in distant situations, the context of copresence meetings. This shared environment is created in the “invisible computer” approach. The idea is that the tool should disappear from user’s consciousness. Indeed, creative design activities require some fluidity in their process. Therefore, any involuntary interruption created by the system can potentially brake creativity. In this perspective, we investigate specifically the “invisibility” of our environment. To do this, we propose a framework for the operationalization of the concept and a methodology to test the system invisibility. This methodology was applied through a case study consisting of a corpus of 12 hours of remote collaborative design sessions with the DSDC. We highlight the learning effects while using our system, conclude on its effectiveness and discuss our methodology. [less ▲]

Understanding collaborative design goes far beyond analyzing group dynamics, tasks allocations or negotiation during decision-making processes. In this paper, we focused on the collaborative sketching process, during which the intentions of designers are supported by their sketches and by specific strokes.Twelve professional designers attended an experimental design session, where they were asked to express, share, capture or interpret sketches. A qualitative and quantitative fine-grained analysis of strokes teach us (i) how designers tend to deal with representations that are not theirs; (ii) what main graphical key-features constitute the inner nature of the shared information and (iii) how and when can this graphic essence be shared with collaborators. Nowadays, the BIM (Building Information Modeling) paradigm is a central topic in the CAAD community. Next to the commercial solutions, the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) have emerged as the best open standard candidate for BIM interoperability. Despite the efforts of the community for promoting IFC over the last 15 years, it seems that its practical adoption in real-life projects has been very limited. The goal of this article is to explore how useful IFC can be today and to provide the reader with some advice for an effective adoption of IFC. Over the last year, we have conducted a project aiming at acquiring a sound understanding of IFC. It was made of two complementary investigations. On one hand, we have focused on the commercial modeling tools and the IFC support they were offering. On the other hand, we have focused on the IFC-based software developments. We have developed a tool converting IFC files into a dedicated thermal assessment based model. We will summarize the experience we have acquired in this project into some advice for users migrating to IFC. Our goal is to confront the practical aspects of the IFC developments, with both the theoretical ambitions and the commercial support currently available. [less ▲]

Les variables prises en compte sont de plus en plus nombreuses et les méthodes de calcul de plus en plus complexes. Nous avons donc besoin de modèles de bâtiment sémantiquement riches, détaillés et précis pour vérifier le respect des exigences réglementaires. Dans cet article, nous discutons l’utilisation du format IFC pour alimenter un logiciel réglementaire d’évaluation de la performance énergétique des bâtiments. Nous présentons les difficultés rencontrées à la fois du point de vue de la modélisation du bâtiment et du point de vue du développement d’un tel outil. [less ▲]

CIMEDE is an industrialized building system focused on modularity, sustainability and cost effectiveness. Our contribution consisted mostly in analyzing (ergonomics, UI, interactions) and implementing a bespoke 3D CAD modeler tailored to the CIMEDE industrialized building system and the specific needs of future users. As part of the overhauling of the building energy efficiency regulations (following European directive 2002/91/CE), the Wallonia and Brussels-Capital Region commissioned the LUCID to develop an optional 3D graphic encoding module to be integrated with the core energy efficiency computation engine developed by Altran Europe. Our contribution consisted mostly in analyzing the target users’ needs and representations (ergonomics, UI, interactions) and implementing a bespoke 3D CAD modeler dedicated to thermal models of buildings taking into account the various geometrical and relational constraints specific to thermal modeling. Our research is embedded in the framework of the development of free-hand drawing-based computer assisted architectural design environment. In this paper, we study the activity of drawings duplication, observed during the paper changes in the phase of preliminary sketching. We aim at identifying the impacts of two digital sketches environments, with or without drawings interpretation, on this activity and on the graphical productions. We observe six activities, two with paper-pencil and four distributed on our two prototypes, and draw some operational conclusions for the development of software designed to support the architectural sketches in the preliminary design stage.
