It is shown, by means of computer simulations of the behaviour of a real structure, that it is safe to design a building with the assumption of pinned joints, even when they show a semi-rigid behaviour. This result is however limited to the cases where the joints show a high ductility, i.e. a capacity of large deformation before the rupture of either the bolts or the welds. Only in few, probably unrealistic cases, this assumption will lead to unsafe results, the lack of safety being however very small, amounting only to a few percent. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. The clinching process, also known as “press joining”, is a mechanical joining technique for sheet metal. Its basic principle is to clamp together several metal sheets by an impact extrusion between a punch and a die. The joint is formed by a localized cold plastic deformation. Forming is used as a joining method. Within the context of this research, University of Liège is developing numerical models, with the FEM code LAGAMINE, that simulate the clinching process. On the other hand, shear tests on simple joints with one or two clinches were realized and their behaviour is reproduced numerically with LAGAMINE. This work opens the way to the analytical formulation of the behaviour of clinched joints. The article will focus on comparisons between experiments and numerical simulations. First, the identification of model parameters will be explained. Then, the predicted failure modes will be analysed by comparison with the xperiments. [less ▲]

This paper presents a new proposal for beam-column interaction formulae initially based on second-order in-plane elastic theory, as an alternative to those proposed in the Eurocode 3 pre-standard [1]. It has been derived according to the following requirements: theoretical background, clear physical meaning, consistency with the other related formulae of Eurocode 3 and accuracy. Besides that, the suggested formulae cover all required continuities: between the cross-section classes, from plasticity to elasticity as slenderness and axial force increase, and continuity between all the individual stability member checks and cross-section verifications. Further to the presentation of the formulae and their background, the good agreement of the proposal is shown through an extensive comparison with more than 15,000 results of finite element numerical simulations. The Merchant-Rankine approach is a practical design procedure which allows to predict the ultimate resistance of sway steel building frames with rigid structural joints. In the present paper the background and the traditional field of application of the Merchant-Rankine formula are first described. Its extension to the design of steel frames with so-called semi-rigid joints is then presented and justified. Finally its application to steel-concrete sway composite building frames is investigated and first conclusions of this work are drawn. [less ▲]

Les approches traditionnelles du dimensionnement des ossatures sont décrites brievement: modélisation en ossature continue avec assemblages rigides eilou en ossature simple avec assemblages articulés, méthode dite des “wind moments" approche de “resistance partielle" calcul rigide-plastique. L'approche moderne clu dimensionnement des ossatures, c'est-à-dire la modélisation en structure semi-continue faisant appel à des assemblages semi-rigicles. est ensuite esquissée; il est expliqué comment la distinguer des approches traditionnelles et lesavantages potentiels (scientifiques et économiques) de son utilisation sont soulignés. Une méthode de dimensionnement cohérente est décrite, dans laquelle le comportement des assemblages est pris en compte dans l'analyse globale dès le départ. ll est rnontré comment modifier les approches de modélisations en structure simple ou en structure continue pour mieux respecter une méthode de calcul cohérente. Il est expliqué qu'une méthode de calcul cohérente peut prendre différentes formes qui dépendent des hypothèses prises pour le comportement des assemblages dans l‘analyse globale. De l'intervenant responsable du dimensionnement des assemblages et/ou du degré de collaboration entre les parties concernées (concepteur et fabricant). Des pratiques de dimensionnement sont identifiées, qui montrent comment les tâches du calcul sont, ou peuvent être, partagées. Il est expliqué qu‘une bonne compréhension clu partage du calcul est essentielle pour modifier la pratique courante de sorte 51 permettre l'utilisation d'une méthode de calcul cohérente. [less ▲]
