This paper describes a stress–strain interpolation method to model the macroscopic anisotropic elasto-plastic behavior of polycrystalline materials. Accurate analytical descriptions of yield loci derived from crystallographic texture [Int. J. Plasticity 19 (2003) 647; J. Phys. IV France 105 (2003) 39] are an interesting alternative to finite element models, where the macroscopic stress is provided by an averaging of microscopic stresses computed on a set of representative crystallites [Acta Metal 22 (1985) 923; Int. J. Plasticity 5 (1989) 67]. The parameters of the analytical functions modeling the yield locus are identified by comparison with a high number of stress tensors computed, for instance, by the well-known Taylor model [J. Inst. Metal 62 (1938) 307]. This identification method depends on the crystallographic texture and should be applied each time that the plastic strain has induced a significant texture evolution. The stress–strain interpolation method accurately describes the anisotropic material behavior in a narrow stress direction defined by only five stress points. The cost of texture updating is then greatly reduced compared to a full analytical function of the yield locus. After the mathematical description of the stress–strain interpolation method, its validity is demonstrated on two non-radial strain paths. The simulations of a deep drawing experiment allow comparing model predictions and measurements. Accuracy and CPU time of the interpolation stress–strain method are judged against two other models, respectively based on a complete analytical yield locus and on the averaging of crystallite stresses. The prediction of the final axial stresses and the residual strains of complex extruded aluminium profiles requires a good knowledge of the material behavior and of the industrial process. This paper is focused on the methods required to provide the whole set of data: material ones and process ones. Scanning differential calorimetry, dilatometry and diffusivity tests identify thermophysic material properties and hot tensile tests identify parameters of the elastovisco- plastic Norton-Hoff law. The description of the industrial process and its simulations are described. Then a sensitivity analyzis provides the cooling key parameters causing the undesired final curvature during the industrial process. [less ▲]

The clinching process, also known as “press joining”, is a mechanical joining technique for sheet metal. Its basic principle is to clamp together several metal sheets by an impact extrusion between a punch and a die. The joint is formed by a localized cold plastic deformation. Forming is used as a joining method. Within the context of this research, University of Liège is developing numerical models, with the FEM code LAGAMINE, that simulate the clinching process. On the other hand, shear tests on simple joints with one or two clinches were realized and their behaviour is reproduced numerically with LAGAMINE. This work opens the way to the analytical formulation of the behaviour of clinched joints. The article will focus on comparisons between experiments and numerical simulations. First, the identification of model parameters will be explained. Then, the predicted failure modes will be analysed by comparison with the xperiments. [less ▲]

The research, performed in the University of Liège, consists in the optimisation of the mould and the whole casting process of the LBP S.A. company (Chênée – Liège) to obtain better cast products. In fact, cast products sometimes present long oscillation marks (λ ≈ 500mm) and some ingots have many internal cracks. The semi-continuous process consists in the vertical casting of 7m height ingots. With the goal to study crack propagation in continuous casting, this paper presents an on going project to develop and identify a mathematical finite element model of damage in steel at high temperature. A representative microscopic cell of the material is presented and adapted to available chemical information, precipitation state and micro-structures observed using metallographic as weel as imaging methods (optical microscopy, SEM, orientation imaging microscopy). Compression tests of cylindrical samples after a thermal treatment have been performed to identify the parameters of an elasto-visco-plastique law of Norton-Hoff type. Hot damage tests in tensile and compression states help to provide information on crack appearance. [less ▲]

The finite element code LAGAMINE developed since 1982 has been adapted to numerous finite elements and constitutive laws. The present researches on micro-macro modelling increase the requirement of CPU time. The parallelization of software is often divided into two main approaches: the coarse grain approach and the fine grain approach. For Finite Element software, the coarse grain method is usually characterized by the use of the mesh partitioning. In the fine grain approach, there is no partition of the mesh. The parallel program is made by the parallelization of instructions issued of the nalysis of dependences between the instructions, and the loops. The efficiency of all these approaches depends on the organization of the memory and on the used exchange protocol (MPI, PVM, or OpenMP). Our approach is intermediate between these two main categories of parallelization. It is characterized by the parallelization of the assembly of the stiffness matrix using a coarse grain approach and the use of a parallel direct solver. Because of the architecture of the available parallel computers, which are shared memory, we decided to use OpenMP protocol. [less ▲]

Cet article présente les diverses méthodes expérimentales mises en œuvre pour caractériser le matériau: essais de compression à chaud, mesures d'analyse thermique différentielle, essais de dilatométrie et de diffusivité. Les méthodes permettant d'identifier les paramètres de la loi élasto-visco-plastique de type Norton-Hoff à partir des essais sont présentées et une analyse bibliographique investigue le problème de la détermination du module de Young à haute température.
