Memory consolidation benefits from sleep. Besides strengthening some memory traces, another crucial, albeit overlooked, function of memory is also to erase irrelevant information. Directed forgetting is an experimental approach consisting in presenting “to be remembered” and “to be forgotten” information, that allows selectively decreasing or increasing the strength of individual memory traces according to the instruction provided at learning. This paradigm was used in combination with fMRI to determine, in Humans, what specifically triggers at encoding sleep-dependent compared to time-dependent consolidation. Our data indicate that relevant items which subjects strived to memorize are consolidated during sleep to a greater extend than items that participants did not intend to learn. This process appears to depend on a differential activation of the hippocampus at encoding, which acts as a signal for the offline reprocessing of relevant memories during post-learning sleep episodes. Anosognosia is a frequent manifestation in Alzheimer disease (AD) but its extent is not yet clearly established. While anosognosia for memory deficit has been widely reported, no study has simultaneously explored anosognosia for personality and behaviour changes. We have tackled this question with 20 AD patients and 20 matched elderly subjects (ES). Participants (AD and ES) assessed their personality and their reactions in social situation both in current (S1) and past (S1_bef) time period. Assessment of these characteristics was also performed by relatives of the participants (R2 and R2_bef). Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05) were performed between discrepancy scores (calculated by comparing answers of subjects and relatives) obtained for AD and ES. A specific measure of anosognosia was also calculated by comparing S1 and R2. Statistical analyses demonstrated (1) that relatives of AD patients report more personality and behavioural changes across time (S1-S1_bef) than relatives of ES (R2–R2_bef); (2) that self-reported changes were not significantly different between AD patients and ES; (3) that anosognosia (S1-R2) was observed in AD patients for personality changes only. Results obtained support the hypothesis that anosognosia does not affect all domain in AD. Indeed, even if AD patients are no more able to assess their current personality, they perceive adequately their current reactions in social situations. [less ▲]

Metamemory is a multi-faceted concept which deals with the individual’s knowledge and control of memory functioning. Previous studies that have examined the ability of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients to monitor efficiently their memory processes provided contradictory results. These discrepancies between studies could be the result of two factors: the kind of memory task used (episodic, semantic) and the kind of memory process on which memory monitoring is assessed (encoding, maintenance, retrieval). In the present study, different aspects of memory monitoring in 21 AD patients and 21 healthy elderly participants were explored with two tasks : a semantic memory task assessing the feeling-of-knowing (FOK) accuracy for general knowledge and an episodic memory task assessing judgment-of-learning (JOL) and FOK accuracy for information associated to a specific spatiotemporal encoding context By comparison to healthy participants, AD patients exhibit impaired performance on episodic FOK accuracy but not on semantic FOK accuracy. Moreover, no difference was observed between the two groups on the JOL post-encoding accuracy. These results confirm that not all aspects of memory monitoring are impaired in AD. Indeed, although there exists an impairment of episodic FOK performance, semantic FOK and JOL post-encoding appear preserved. The dissociation between the two FOK performance could be due to recruitment of more automatic processes for metacognitive judgment on general knowledge (semantic FOK) than for metacognitive judgment based on specific recent experience (episodic FOK). Similarly, a global prediction during maintenance (JOL) could be based on more automatic processes than an item-by-item judgment during retrieval. [less ▲]

Recent studies have shown that both young and elderly subjects activate the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) when they make self-referential judgements. However, the VMPFC might interact with different brain regions during self-referencing in the two groups. In this study, based on data from Ruby et al (2009), we have explored this issue using psychophysiological interaction analyses. Young and elderly participants had to judge adjectives describing personality traits in reference to the self versus a close friend or relative (the other), taking either a first-person or a third-person perspective. The physiological factor was the VMPFC activity observed in all participants during self judgement, and the psychological factor was the self versus other referential process. The main effect of first-person perspective in both groups revealed that the VMPFC was coactivated with the left parahippocampal gyrus and the precuneus for self versus other judgments. The main effect of age showed a stronger correlation between activity in the VMPFC and the lingual gyrus in young compared to elderly subjects. Finally, in the interaction, the VMPFC was specifically co-activated with the orbitofrontal gyrus and the precentral gyrus when elderly subjects took a first-person perspective for self judgements. No significant result was observed for the interaction in young subjects. These findings show that, although the VMPFC is engaged by both young and older adults when making self-referential judgements, this brain structure interacts differently with other brain regions as a function of age and perspective. These differences might reflect a tendency by older people to engage in more emotional/social processing than younger adults when making self-referential judgements with a first-person perspective [less ▲]

Abstract Episodic future thinking allows humans to mentally simulate virtually infinite future possibilities, yet this device is fundamentally goal-directed and should not be equated with fantasizing or wishful thinking. The purpose of this functional magnetic resonance imaging study was to investigate the neural basis of such goal-directed processing during future-event simulation. Participants were scanned while they imagined future events that were related to their personal goals (personal future events) and future events that were plausible but unrelated to their personal goals (nonpersonal future events). Results showed that imaging personal future events elicited stronger activation in ventral medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) compared to imaging nonpersonal future events. Moreover, these brain activations overlapped with activations elicited by a second task that assessed semantic self-knowledge (i.e., making judgments on one's own personality traits), suggesting that ventral MPFC and PCC mediate self-referential processing across different functional domains. It is suggested that these brain regions may support a collection of processes that evaluate, code, and contextualize the relevance of mental representations with regard to personal goals. The implications of these findings for the understanding of the function instantiated by the default network of the brain are also discussed. [less ▲]

Impaired memory performance does not constitute the prominent deficit in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Nevertheless, it has been suggested that some specific aspects of memory may be disrupted in FTD patients, in particular, the ability to consciously recollect the context in which information has been learned (Simons et al., 2002). The aims of the current study was to investigate the states of awareness accompanying recognition memory by asking participants to make Remember/Know/Guess judgments. Concretely, 12 FDT patients and 12 matched healthy participants studied 20 word pairs. During cued recall, each trial consisted of one word from a pair and participants had to try to recall the associated word. Finally, a 5-alternative forced-choice recognition task was given and participants had to say whether they chose a word because they recollected the study context (Remember), they knew they saw the word, without recalling anything else (Know) or they guessed (Guess). Results from the cued recall and recognition parts indicated that FTD recalled less word pairs than the controls, but had similar levels of recognition performance. Nevertheless, FTD patients gave less Remember responses than the controls, and tended to give more Guess responses. To conclude, episodic memory performance in FTD was characterised by impaired self-initiated memory retrieval processes. Although global recognition memory performance was preserved, FTD patients’ memories lacked of autonoetic consciousness and were mainly based on familiarity judgments and guessing. This pattern of results is similar to that found in patients with focal frontal lobe lesions (e.g., Wheeler et al., 1995; Wheeler & Stuss, 2003) and is consistent with the idea that the memory dysfunctions observed in FTD may stem from damage to the prefrontal cortex. Faces and self-referential materials (eg the own name) are more likely to capture attention in the inattentional blindness (IB) paradigm than others stimuli. This effect is presumably due to the meaning of these stimuli rather than to their familiarity (Mack and Rock 1998). IB has mostly been investigated with schematic stimuli in previous work. In the present study, the generalisability of this finding was tested using photographic stimuli. In support to the view that faces constitute a special category of stimuli, it was found that pictures of faces resisted more to IB than pictures of common objects (Experiment 1) or than pictures of inverted faces (Experiment 2). In a third experiment, the influence of face familiarity and identity (ie the participant’s own face, a friend’s face and an unknown face) on IB rates was evaluated. Unexpectedly, no differential resistance to blindness across these three kinds of faces was found. In conclusion, picture of faces attracted attention more than pictures of objects or inverted faces in the IB paradigm. However, this effect was not dependent on face familiarity or identity. Nous avons récemment observé que le cortex préfrontal ventro-médial (CPFVM) est activé à la fois chez des sujets jeunes et âgés dans une tâche de jugement d’adjectifs nécessitant d’évaluer sa propre personnalité par rapport à celle d’un autre dans le contexte d’un prise de perspective à la première (1PP) et à la troisième (3PP) personne (Ruby et al., submitted). Nous avons poursuivi l’analyse de ces données par des analyses de connectivité fonctionnelle afin de déterminer le réseau des régions cérébrales associées à la performance des sujets jeunes et âgés. Les résultats montrent qu’en 1PP, l’activité du CPFVM est associée à celle du gyrus frontal inférieur et du gyrus parahippocampique chez les sujet âgés, mais uniquement à celle du cortex occipital chez les sujets jeunes. En 3PP, une connectivité fonctionnelle existe entre le CPFVM et le gyrus frontal médial, le gyrus frontal inférieur et les régions temporales supérieures chez les sujets âgées ; mais uniquement avec les régions occipitale et pariétale chez les sujets jeunes. Les régions cérébrales associées à l’activité du CPFVM chez les sujets jeunes ont été décrites comme impliquées dans la récupération en mémoire autobiographique ainsi que dans les processus de « mentalizing ». En ce qui concerne les personne âgées, le réseau cérébral découvert est relié à la récupération de souvenirs sémantique et épisodique (gyrus parahippocampique et temporal supérieur) mais aussi à l’attribution d’une valence émotionnelle à l’adjectif (gyrus frontal inférieur) et à la prise de perspective (gyrus frontal médial). Ces résultats indiquent (1) que le CPFVM est connecté à un réseau cérébral plus important chez les personnes âgées que chez les jeunes lors de jugement sur soi ; (2) que les sujets jeunes réalisent la tâche sur base d’informations autobiographiques seulement alors que les personnes âgées recrutent en plus des processus cognitifs de nature plus réflexive. In agreement with the literature, we have recently observed that the ventro-medial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) is activated both in young and elderly subjects during a adjective judgment task requiring judgment about self vs. other in the context of a first (1PP) or third (3PP) perspective-taking (Ruby et al., submitted). Here, we have performed functional connectivity analyses to determine the network of cerebral areas associated to the performance of young and elderly subjects. <br />Results indicate that, in the 1PP condition, activity of the VMPFC is related to the inferior frontal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus in elderly but to the occipital cortex only in young subjects. In the 3PP condition, functional connectivity exist between the VMPFC and medial frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal areas in elderly, but with occipital and parietal areas only in young subjects. <br />The cerebral areas associated to VMPFC activity in young subjects were previously described as involved both in autobiographical memory retrieval and mentalizing processes. With regard to elderly, the cerebral network evidenced is related to retrieval of semantic and episodic memories (parahippocampal and superior temporal) but also to the attribution of emotional valence to the adjectives (inferior frontal) and perspective taking (medial frontal gyrus). <br />These results indicate (1) that the VMPFC is connected to a larger cerebral network in elderly than in young subjects during self judgements; (2) that young subjects perform the task on the basis of autobiographical information retrieval only, while elderly subjects use supplementary, more reflexive, cognitive processes.
