[more ▼] BACKGROUND: Mottled subclinical melanoderma (MSM) is frequently seen on facial skin using the ultraviolet light enhanced visualization (ULEV) method. The corresponding aspect on the hairless scalp remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To explore the field distribution of melanin on the scalp of fair-skinned Caucasian subjects. METHOD: The scalp was examined in 43 men with androgenic alopecia. The Visioscan((R)) camera provided the ULEV pictures. Another optical (Visioface((R)) Quick) device was used under white light illumination followed by colour contrast enhancement. This was reached after specific computer filtration of the cyan hue wavelengths. RESULTS: Under white light illumination, the scalp looked normal. MSM patterns were disclosed by both optical procedures as evenly scattered discrete patchy fields of hypermelanosis. The smaller rounded spots were restricted to the lips of the hair infundibula. Larger irregularly shaped spots predominated in the interfollicular areas. A few hypomelanotic spots were scattered over the scalp. CONCLUSION: The present observations based on dual optical methods possibly provide information about a patterned pathobiology of melanocytes on the scalp. The spotty MSM pattern looked similar to the reported aspects on the face. It somewhat resembled the widespread PUVA-induced lentiginosis. [more ▼] The homeobox family and its subset of HOX gene products represent a family of transcription factors directing DNA-protein and protein-protein interactions. In the embryo, they are central regulators in cell differentiation during morphogenesis. A series of genes of the four HOX gene clusters A, B, C, and D were reported to show aberrant expressions in oncogenesis, particularly in cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). They are involved in cell proliferation and progression in the CMM metastatic path. We present relevant peer-reviewed literature findings about the aberrant expression of HOX genes in CMM. The number of CMM cell nuclei exhibiting aberrant HOX protein expression appears correlated with tumour progression. [more ▼] BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no reported objective method allowing confident assessment of hair hydration mapping. Thus, assessing hair moisture kinetics and versatility according to hair shaft damages and hair care products is difficult to perform. AIM: To explore a new method for assessing hair moisture. METHOD: A new method of hair capacitance mapping (HCM) is introduced for monitoring hair surface damage and hydration. This study was performed on intact and weathered hair locks. Samples were soaked in 10% solutions of regular shampoos or in tap water alone. HCM was performed using the SkinChip((R)) device based on a semiconductor image sensor technology. Time to complete water desorption from cuticular cells was recorded. RESULTS: Hair surface moisture was increased for <30 min after soaking in the shampoos or water alone. The method was sensitive enough to disclose a gradient of moisture from the base to the tip of the hair shafts. Weathered hairs lost their moisture more rapidly than intact hairs. CONCLUSION: Hair capacitance mapping appears to be a promising method in the assessment of the dynamics of hair surface moisture. [more ▼] Multipotent stem cells of adult skin are found in distinct biological locations identified as niches. These stem cell populations are defined by specific molecular and functional attributes. The epidermal stem cells are found in the interfollicular areas and in the bulge and isthmus of the hair follicles. Dermal stem cells are harbored in the peripilar connective tissue sheaths and in the hair papilla. Some skin stem cells are found in extracutaneous sites. Other stem cells are involved in pathology, such as neoplastic stem cells identified in malignant melanomas. [more ▼] AIM: Both interstitial granulomatous dermatitis (IGD) and palisaded neutrophilic granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) are rare disorders typically associated with systemic autoimmune conditions. They probably represent different aspects of a disease spectrum encompassing the concept of autoimmunity-related granulomatous dermatitis (ARGD). CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old woman presented with ARGD and autoimmune hepatitis. The clinical presentation suggested PNGD, while histopathology was consistent with IGD. DISCUSSION: The association of ARGD with autoimmune hepatitis is apparently a rare event. The present case shows that the clinicopathological correlation in ARGD does not always clearly fit with the classical presentations of IGD or PNGD. [more ▼] Overproduction of sweat, sweaty skin, and body malodors are felt unpleasant by many people in diverse social groups. This review summarizes the functional aspects of the eccrine, apocrine, and apoeccrine sweat glands as encountered in health and disease. A series of measuring methods are conveniently used to explore any trouble in sweat production. These include the gravimetric method, water evaporation quantification, skin staining procedures, dye injections, casting replicas, average electrometric assessments, and skin capacitance mapping / imaging (SCM). Qualitative assessment is provided by collection of sweat and volatile compounds followed by chromatographic analysis. At present, SCM appears to be the most valuable method for assessing the number of active glands and their individual sweat production by the eccrine and apoeccrine glands. [more ▼] Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory dermatitis mediated by cytokines released by dendritic plasmacytoid cells in combination with Th1- and Th17-cells. This complex and multifactorial condition is commonly associated with some comorbidities. The complexity of a coordinated management of such intricated pathologies is obvious. It calls for the so-called medicine "centered around the patient" which tops off the evidence-based medicine. Vitamin D by its immunomodulatory effect on T helper cells exerts a therapeutic benefit on psoriasis and some of its comorbidities including the metabolic syndrome. A vitamin D oral treatment was proposed in order to reduce the cardiovascular risk, and the ensuing morbidity and mortality. [more ▼] In recent years, the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis has benefited from the development of targeted biologicals. Assessing this new class of drugs calls for precise modalities of severity/improvement ratings of the disease. Bioengineering-driven dermometrology aims at improving objective and quantitative assessments of disease severity and treatment efficacy. Skin capacitance mapping/imaging is one of those emerging methods. Among its clinical applications, psoriasis capacitance mapping (PCM) was introduced in order to assess both skin scaliness and water trapping inside the stratum corneum (inflammatory serum deposits) on lesional skin. PCM was used for assessing the therapeutic effects of ustekinumab on target lesions of 5 psoriatic patients. The reduction in the inflammatory dampness of the stratum corneum was conveniently seen after a 1-month ustekinumab treatment. The present pilot study suggests that PCM could be used as a fast and convenient method for assessing the anti-inflammatory efficacy of ustekinumab and other biotherapies. The methicillin-resistant staphylococci are particularly involved in various aspects of pathology. Epidermal antimicrobial peptides are part of the host defense mechanisms corresponding to the innate immunity. They may limit the extent in colonization. However, some staphylococci are able to bypass the antimicrobial peptides released by the host. [more ▼] Primary cicatricial alopecias (PCA) result from the inflammatory destruction of the hair follicle, followed by its replacement by a fibrotic streamer. The involvement of multipotent stem cells of the hair follicle is possible through a transdifferentiation pathway. The diagnosis relies on clinico-pathologic correlations. PCA are classified as the neutrophilic, lymphocytic and mixed types. Each of these groups gather specific disorders including folliculitis decalvans, dissecting folliculitis of the scalp, erosive pustulosis of the scalp, keloidal acne of the nape, frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris and lupus erythematosus. [more ▼] Cancer patients under targeted chemotherapy to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) frequently suffer from unusual skin adverse events. In the past, these changes were globally qualified as a rash. Our aim was to assess objectively by non invasive bioinstrumentation some early structural and functional skin changes associated with EGFR inhibitor treatment. A series of 27 cancer patients aged 58-66 years were assessed using two ultraviolet light emitting CCD cameras, Visioscan((R)) and Visiopor((R)). Assessments were performed on the foreheads at inclusion and therefore at weekly intervals for 2 months at most. No topical treatment was applied during the assessment period. The Visioscan((R)) camera revealed specular light reflectance at the site of follicular plugging. The interfollicular stratum corneum showed occasional focal hyperkeratosis. These features increased in severity with the EGFR inhibitor treatment, indicating follicular involvement as an early adverse event of the therapy. The follicular fluorescence revealed by the Visiopor((R)) camera remained unchanged over the treatment period. The present findings suggest an EGFR inhibitor-induced kerosis (follicular hyperkeratosis) possibly responsible for acneiform reactions.
