This study evaluated the impact of the mother’s and father’s anxiety sensitivity (AS) andlearning experiences on children’s AS, and the influence of two moderators: the children’sfemininity orientation and the children’s emotional intelligence (EI). The samplecomprised 200 non-clinical children, aged 9–13 years, and their parents (mothers andfathers). Results revealed that the effect of parental AS on children’s AS is moderated bythe children’s EI for maternal AS and by their femininity traits for paternal AS. Learningexperiences following somatic sensations influenced the children’s level of AS. Morespecifically, special attention by parents following a child’s somatic sensations (reinforce-ment and transmission of information) was associated with high AS in children. Parentalreactions of fear following a parent’s somatic sensations (modelling) seem to predicthigher scores for AS when the link is moderated by the child’s femininity orientation. Theimplications of these findings are discussed. [less ▲]

Abstract: Objective: Being a relatively recent concept, the intolerance of uncertainty (IU) suffers from inconsistent definitions and conceptual overlap. The core objective of the study is to clarify its clinical manifestations and its involved cognitive processes. Method: The procedure is based on algorithms (equations of keywords) encoded simultaneously in databases (Scopus, PubMed, and PsycArticles). Results are filtered by the year (range of 10 years [2005–2015] because it is a recent concept) and the relevance of abstracts. Once the studies are appraised, results are categorized in two groups: studies which examine the IU in a clinical perspective (relations with one or several anxiety disorders) (cluster A) and those which measure the IU through a cognitive perspective (cognition, metacognition) (cluster B). Results: 66 results are retrieved: 50 results concern the cluster A and 16 examine the cluster B. The state of the IU varies between studies (e.g. predictor and mediator), which make comparisons difficult. Notwithstanding, the IU construct seems to be a broad transdiagnostic maintaining risk factor involved in a range of psychological disorders. Conclusion: This clustering supported that researchers and clinicians may benefit from incorporating IU within cognitive and computational research design and as a specific treatment target. Background and purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a 38-h communication skills training program designed for multidisciplinary radiotherapy teams. Materials and methods: Four radiotherapy teams were randomly assigned to a training program or to a waiting list. Assessments were scheduled at baseline (T1) and then after the training was completed or four months later (T2), respectively. Communication around radiotherapy delivery was assessed based on audio recordings of the first and last radiotherapy sessions in order to assess team members’ communication skills and the expression of concerns by breast cancer patients (analyzed with content analysis software LaComm). Results: 198 radiotherapy sessions were recorded. During the first radiotherapy sessions, members of the trained teams exhibited more assessment skills (p = 0.048), provided more setting information (p < 0.001), and used more social words (p = 0.019) compared to the members of the untrained teams. During the last radiotherapy session, members of the trained teams used more assessment skills (p = 0.004) and patients interacting with members of the trained teams expressed more sadness words (p = 0.023). Conclusion: Training of multidisciplinary teams has the potential to transfer skills that affect the short exchanges that take place around radiotherapy delivery. [less ▲]

Chances of survival following a cardiac arrest are very low and inversely proportional to the duration of cardiovascular arrest. It is of critical importance to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as soon as possible, even before the arrival of emergency medical team (EMT) on the scene. Therefore, early bystander CPR is a key factor in improving survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOH-CA). In Belgium, the ALERT algorithm (Algorithme Liégeois d’Encadrement à la Réanimation par Téléphonea offers the opportunity to help bystanders perform CPR. Dispatchers’ assisted telephone CPR has introduced a new link in the chain of survival, that contributes to a reduced OOH-CA mortality rate but at the cost of increased responsibilities and stress. ALERT also gives a new role to bystanders; they are no longer just spectators but become actors when they witness a cardiac arrest. Our team was interested in the psychological burden of ALERT. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of CPR performed by untrained persons. We studied the potential influence of different coping strategies on this impact, as well as the possible correlation with the degree of attachment to the victim and the risk of developing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). We noticed that some psychological negative impact on the bystanders could be recognized. We also identified beneficial and detrimental coping strategies. In the future, we wonder if Video-CPR (V-CPR) might improve the quality of resuscitation. [less ▲]

Introduction : La procrastination est définie comme une tendance à reporter ce qui est nécessaire pour atteindre un objectif. Ainsi, la procrastination concerne une intention qui ne se traduit pas en action. L’intention d’implémentation se définit notamment à travers le désengagement face au problème, l’orientation vers les buts, et l’activation des ressources et cette étude examine la part explicative de ces trois dimensions dans le processus de procrastination. Méthodologie : Un échantillon de 197 étudiants ont complété les versions françaises du Solution Focused Inventory (SFI), et du Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS). Résultats : L’intention d’implémentation intervient dans 32% de la variance de la procrastination. Le désengagement face au problème et l’orientation vers les buts expliquent de manière significative la fréquence de procrastination.  Conclusion : Le processus de procrastination pourrait en partie être expliqué par manque d’intentions d’implémentation, plus particulièrement par une difficulté à se désengager du problème (tendance à être bloqué dans sa réflexion en se focalisant davantage sur les problèmes) et à s’orienter vers les buts (présenter des difficultés à mettre au point des plans d’action efficaces). Integration of e-Health technologies for purposes of both assessment and intervention has recently become an interest area in pediatric psychology. The purpose of this study is to present psychometric characteristics of a technology-based (i.e., tablet administration) approach for measuring quality of life (QOL) in children. Eighty children (8-12 years) completed the Quality of Life Systemic Inventory for Children (QLSI-C) twice over a two-week delay, in a crossover design that used paper and tablet-based modes of administration. Equivalence of scores across methods was examined using Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), augmented by paired t-test and Pearson’s correlations. Test-retest reliability was assessed using paired t-test and Pearson’s correlations while internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s coefficient. Results showed a good concordance across methods of administration (ICCs = .72 to .91; r = .56 to .83). Paired t-test showed no significant differences between the tablet and paper version of the QLSI-C. Internal consistency reliability yielded acceptable Cronbach’s alphas for all QLSI-C scores, with all α >.70. Test-retest reliability for the tablet-administered QLSI-C was good (r = .66 to .90). Paired t-test showed no significant difference between time 1 and 2 for the QLSI-C scores, except for the state score. Findings established the reliability of the tablet-administered QLSI-C scores. This technology approach to assessment is more attractive for children, decreases time for administration, and enhances the ease of scoring. These advantages might encourage both clinicians and researchers to consider using e-Health developments in assessment in pediatric psychology. [less ▲]

Background: The lifestyles of family caregivers pose risks to their physical, mental and social health. The capability to stay healthy may be protective in the context of poor socioeconomic conditions and risk behaviours, but the interrelations between its aspects and their respective influences remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the interrelations between the factors comprising health capability of family caregivers (HCFC) and the respective contributions of its components. Methods: All stroke patients admitted to all hospitals in Luxembourg were identified by the ‘Inspection Générale de la Sécurité Sociale’ using the national database system for care expenditure reimbursement, and asked to designate the main person caring for them. Sixty-two caregivers (mean age 59.3 years; 40 women and 22 men) responded face to face, to a questionnaire including 20 items measuring eight aspects of health capability (physical functioning, psychological functioning, lifestyle value, self-efficacy towards the use of health services, family support, social capital, material conditions/sense of security, and satisfaction with the interactions with health services). Using a Bayesian approach, significance values were estimated by comparing the test values to the posterior distribution of the parameters. Structural equation modelling with standard deviations was applied. Results: Female family caregivers had lower scores than men in physical and psychological functioning. Family caregivers with the lowest incomes had the least lifestyle value, social capital and material conditions/security. Self-efficacy towards health services increased with age. The material conditions/sense of security factor was positively correlated with almost all the others. The items that impacted health capability factors the most were - for physical functioning – atigue, and - for family support - feeling abandoned by the family. Conclusions: During the chronic phase, relationships between risk behaviours can help guide social and health decision-makers to determine their priorities in improving the lives of family caregivers. Enhancing health capability involves implementing programs that relieve family caregivers physically, and foster family networking around the person being cared for. Special attention should also be paid to the socially disadvantaged in order to fight inequalities in health capability. [less ▲]

Introduction: The Parenting Stress Index (PSI) is widely used to measure stress related to the demands of parenthood. Unfortunately, no French adaptation and validation of the PSI Short Form (Fourth Edition) had yet been published. This study examine the factor structure and the psychometric properties of the French translation of the PSI-4-SF. Method: Sample consists of 210 parents of children aged 5 to 12 years old. Factor structure of the PSI-4-SF was investigated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Three models were tested, with one, two and three dimensions. Internal consistency reliability and validity were also examined. Results: CFA showed that the original three-factor solution most closely approximated our data despite the imperfection of the model fit indices. Results also indicated a good internal consistency reliability and validity. Conclusion: The French version of the PSI-4-SF shows promise as a valuable instrument for assessing parenting stress in the French-speaking population. [less ▲]

Background: The common sense model of self-regulation (CSM) provides a framework for understanding the connection between emotions, thoughts and behaviors in people experiencing illness. However, most of model in health psychology, including the CSM, were initially addressed to adult patients. Objective: This study examines the traditional conceptualization of the CSM where coping act as a mediator of the relation between illness perception and emotional distress in a pediatric population with chronic disease, namely Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Method: Using a cross-sectional design, 38 children with CF aged between 8 and 12 years participated in the study. All children were asked to complete: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), the Kidcope and the Children’s Illness Perception Questionnaire (CIPQ). A composite score labelled “emotional distress” including scores of anxiety and depressive symptoms were created. Results: Illness perception predicted emotional distress (Timeline: β = .43; t = 2.835; p = .007; Consequences: β = .50; t = 3.429; p = .002; Control: β = .18; t = 1.088; p = .284). As regard with coping strategies, only emotional outburst and distraction predicted emotional distress (emotional outburst: β = .48; t = 3.241; p = .003; distraction: β = .32; t = 2.038; p = .049). However, there were no relation of illness perception subscales with emotional outburst and distraction. Therefore, the mediational role of coping strategies between illness perception and emotional distress could not be tested. Conclusion: Findings did not confirm the original conceptualization of coping as a mediator suggesting that the CSM needs to be adapted when applied with a pediatric population. Even though young children are able to think before acting (i.e. Piaget’s work), future research should explore the possibility that cognitions and actions exist at the same level and can independently impact adjustment outcomes.
