The study concerns the application techniques of agrochemical products and especially focuses on the wear of spraying nozzles. This one leads to a modification of the spraying characteristics and the homogeneity of distribution deteriorates. An accelerated wear process of nozzles is defined by the standard ISO 5682-1, which makes it possible to compare the wear resistance of the different nozzles available on the market. In order to accelerate the process, an erosive suspension is used in the test rig, but this suspension looses its characteristics during the utilisation time. This is the reason why a system measuring continuously the erosive power has been set up. This system is validated by different discontinuous measurement and the correlation observed have a coefficient of about 0,99. From the signal detected by the new device, two calculations have been carried out. A first one determining continuously the total wear quantity of the nozzles. A second one identifying continuously the erosive power of the suspension. On the one hand, we obtain a basis allowing to compare the wear resistance of nozzles and on the other hand, a parameter indicating the appropriate time to change the suspension. [less ▲]

The spray pattern characteristics of a number of different series of flat fan nozzles were investigated in two ways. The first method was to measure the distribution by means of a classic patternator with collecting cylinders. The second method consisted of numerical simulation of the distribution, by combining the real distributions of a number of nozzles. The real distribution was measured on a classic patternator for each nozzle separately. The numerical simulation is computerized and automated. This system allows both time and labour gains, and permits multiple trials with the same series of nozzles. Numerical simulation results are compared with spray distributions obtained on the patternator. The sprayed volumes of liquid were found to be significantly different from the simulated ones (level of significance 95%). However, the coefficient of variation characterizing the homogeneity of the spread volumes can be calculated using simulated volumes. This can be done once an empirical linear relation is established between the coefficients of variation obtained from simulated volumes and the ones obtained from measured volumes. [less ▲]

The 1st September 1995, the belgian Federal Ministry of Agriculture set up a compulsory control of the sprayers used. All the devices, except for some ofthem, are subjected to a compulsory periodic checking. The practical organsization of the control as well as the test procedure are a bit different from the ones of other European countries. They have been chosen on the basis of educational criteria rather than repressive ones. After 20 months of control, the result is encouraging. More than 13 000 sprayers have already been controlled. Less than 5 % of the devices are rejected after a first control. The condition of working sprayers has been improved. At last, this action has made the controlled owner conscious of the problems related to the spreading og agrochemicals. [less ▲]

Il est proposé de procéder l’évaluation environnementale de l’exploitation agricole par la réalisation d’un écobilan de celle-ci. Cette notion d’écobilan doit s’entendre comme un bilan d’énergies et de matières aux frontières du système étudié. Dans notre cas, ce système est l’exploitation agricole. Cet écobilan est complété par une analyse du risque relative à l’usage des pesticides, ces derniers se prêtant difficilement à la méthode de l’écobilan. La méthode de réalisation de cet écobilan est explicitée en distinguant 1° la définition des objectifs et du champ de l’étude 2° l’inventaire et 3° l’analyse des incidences. Une démonstration de l’utilisation d’un logiciel effectuant cet écobilan est ensuite présentée aux participants. [less ▲]

A European stream leads member countries to take action on sprayer conformity. Volontary inspection of crop sprayers are carried out in several countries. These control methods are not always specifically defined. Other countries, such as Germany, Holland and Belgium, have established a compulsory inspection of crop sprayers already in use. In these cases, inspection methods and practical organisation have been clearly and officially defined. The Belgian Federal Ministry of Agriculture implemented on 04 September 1995 a compulsory inspection of crop sprayers in use in Belgium. Prior to that, the first goal was to choose a method adapted to an “on site” inspection. The control procedure that has been selected for the whole of Belgium is different from that practiced in many countries where the patternator is used. A successful spray application doesn't only depend on the choice of the appropriate chemical product and on the treatment period, but also depends on the user's abilities and the working order of the crop sprayer. The experience shows that these two points often pose a problem. Concerning the equipment, many countries have taken initiatives for the sprayers control. This one is usually free but the tendance is to make it obligatory. The control method implemented in Belgium (Wallon region) is different from the general method based on the use of a spray pattern collector: it is completely mobile and is essentially based on the measure of the pressure at the boom and of the nozzles output. The results show that many sprayers are not in a good working order. [less ▲]

Some of the sprayers that have been manufactured over the past few years are fitted with electronic flow control systems. The purpose of these devices is to adjust the flow rate to changes in the working speed or in the recommended spray volume. The first part of the study compares these electronic systems with one conventional hydraulic flow control (fow metering device) on the basis of their response time to variations in working speed. The study also compares the response time of two current types of electronic flow control systems at various boom widths (controlled by shutting off or opening parts of the boom) or to deliberate changes in the spray volume. Response times are also converted into equivalent treated areas. [less ▲]

Sprayer control is essential for optimal application of diverse agrochemicals. Optimal application ensures respect for the environment. For the first time, electronic measurement devices have been used to improve sprayer control speed and precision. A chain of measurement devices permits monitoring and recording of information while the sprayer is in motion. This chain is composed of the following components: electromagnetic flowmeter – pressure transducer – impulse wheel, amplifier, transmitter-receiver, recorder and computer. This device is able to control many processes. It allows the continuous recording of instantaneous data flow-pressure-speed, observation of regulation system and punctual fault detection. Control duration is short, especially considering the amount of collected informations. After processing, information about each apparatus can be conveniently stored in a central file. [less ▲]
