A Pd-Ag/SiO2 xerogel catalyst prepared in one step by sol-gel process has been entrapped in cylindrical porous alumina foams of three different pore sizes in order to shape the catalyst under the appropriate form with suitable mechanical resistance to be used in an industrial fixed bed reactor. After drying, calcination and reduction, the Pd-Ag/SiO2 xerogel catalyst pellets are immobilized inside the open porosity of the alumina foam. The localization of the xerogel catalyst in the alumina foams has been studied by X-ray tomography. The three-dimensional porous structure was reconstructed from the consecutive cross-sections obtained by this technique. This method shows that the Pd-Ag/SiO2 xerogel catalyst is uniformly dispersed inside the porosity of the alumina foams. Activity and selectivity of Pd-Ag/SiO2 xerogel catalyst reference or catalyst entrapped in alumina foams have been studied for selective hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane into ethylene. The specific reaction rate obtained with catalyst entrapped in alumina foams is smaller than the one obtained from corresponding catalyst powders. The catalytic activity decrease observed for Pd-Ag/SiO2 xerogel catalyst entrapped in porous alumina foams most probably arises from diffusional limitations inside the porous texture of the alumina foams. Resorcinol-formaldehyde gels were produced at 50, 70 and 90 degrees C and with three different R/C ratios (500, 1000 and 2000). The effect of these variables combined with that of aging time was studied in order to optimize the synthesis conditions. The convective air-drying process was used, and the drying duration was studied with regard to the synthesis conditions. The aging time has no effect on the pore texture after 24 h at 90 degrees C or 48 h at 70 C, whatever the R/C value. The synthesis-aging step can be shortened by increasing the temperature. Nevertheless, the pore size tends then to decrease, especially when R/C is high, but this can be counterbalanced by increasing R/C. Moreover, bubbles often appear in the gel at high synthesis temperature, which limits the temperature to about 70 degrees C in the case of monolithic parts. At 70 degrees C and with an air velocity of 2 m/s, the elimination of 90% of the solvent requires 1 h drying when the pore size reaches 400-600 nm, 2.5 h for 50 nm wide pores and 3 h when the pore size decreases to 15-20 nm. The drying duration does not exceed 8 h in all cases and could be shortened by increasing the temperature at the end of the process. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

Based on airlift configuration, a novel circulating jet-loop submerged membrane bioreactor (JLMBR) adapted to ammonium partial oxidation has been developed. Membrane technology and combined air and water forced circulation are adopted to obtain a high biomass retention time and to achieve a separate control of mixing and aeration. This study is intended to determine how gas-liquid mass transfer is affected by operating conditions. In a first approximation, liquid was assumed to be perfectly mixed. A classical non-steady state clean water test, known as the "gas out-gas in" method, was used to determine the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient k(L)a. Air and recirculated liquid superficial velocities were gradually increased from 0.013 to 0.019m s(-1) and 0.0056 to 0.011 m s(-1), respectively. Subsequently, the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient kLa varied from 0.01 to 0.02 s(-1). It appears to be influenced by the combined action of air and recirculated liquid flowrates in the range 0.72-1.03N m(3) h(-1) and 0.30-0.58 m(3) h(-1), respectively, for air and liquid. Correlations are proposed to describe this double influence. Experiments were performed on tap water and a culture medium used for the autotrophic growth of nitrifying bacteria, respectively. Oxygen transfer appeared to be not significantly affected by the mineral salt (0.48 g 1(-1)) encountered in this medium. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

We describe a new, high-energy (420 kV), large-scale (0.45 m in diameter, 4 m in height) x-ray tomograph developed to investigate gas and liquid flow through fixed bed like absorption, distillation and reactive distillation columns. The first results obtained with this set-up on test objects (physical phantoms), such as a cylindrical container filled with water or a large diameter structured metallic packing, validate the technique as a quantitative tool for geometrical measurements. Very detailed two-dimensional (21)) and three-dimensional (3D) images of a 0.09 m diameter KATAPAK-SP 12, a reactive distillation packing, are presented. Quantitative information relative to liquid hold-up distribution may be obtained from tomographic imaging performed on an irrigated column packed with this element. [less ▲]
