In French, the term "intervention" is used since a few years. The paper will: (1) deal with the topic of instruction limites to teachers' decisions and interventions during the interactive phase in teaching; during this phase, activities planned in the pre-interactive phase are implemented: the interactive phase concerns the task's presentation, the pupils' activity and the control of this activity in terms of behavioural management and of the quality of the eprformance (feedback); (2) refer to the main research methods used in gathering data, and (3) develop the main findings in the domain of instruction: teacher thinking and behaviour, pupils' thoughts and behaviour, management of the class or in other words control of pupils' behaviour. It is evident that thougts and behaviours are closely related and are part of the relationship between teachers and pupils. The paper focused only on texts appearing in French, Portuguese and Spanish published since 1997 in Physical eeducation journals and Proceeddings of international congresses. [less ▲]

A three-step model of coaches’ tactical thinking process is proposed: pre-interactive, interactive and post-interactive decisions. This study focuses on the interactive decisions. Its first objective was to verify if a coach is able to report these decisions at the end of a game. The second objective was to analyse the goals and factors inducing the decisions. Data were collected during and after four games directed by two coaches, one in basketball, and the other in volleyball. Their teams participated in the second division of the Belgian national championship (1998-1999). The research method was similar to that developed by Gilbert, Trudel, and Haughian (1999). Coaches reported a limited number (1 to 9) of tactical decisions immediately after each game. Decisions reported by the coaches and additional decisions selected by researchers from videotapes of the games were used for stimulated recall interviews. A total of 82 decisions were analysed with the basketball coach and 88 with the volleyball coach. Data analysis was considered separately for each coach. Calling time out, player substitutions, and tactical cues were the most frequently analysed decisions. Adapting the team strategy and providing information or directives were the priority goals of the decisions. Most of the decisions were determined by subjective field information. [less ▲]

Motivational aspects play a particularly important role in teaching. They are considered a powerful mediator between teacher action and teaching effects. Pupils’ motivation towards school and physical education has already been analysed from the pupils’ point of view (Piéron, Ledent, Almond, Airstone and Newsburry, 1996). On another side, its perception by teachers is less documented. This study focused on the identification by PE teachers of pupils’ behaviours indicating that they were motivated or not. Moreover, perception of reasons related to lack of motivation in pupils was also investigated. Twenty-nine teachers fulfilled a questionnaire during an inservice preparation seminar. Their answers were analysed and inductively classified in categories. Thirteen categories of criteria showing the presence or lack of motivation were identified. Motivation was predominantly perceived by (1) the quality of the working climate (16.8%); (2) the intend to be involved in the PE lesson (14%); (3) positive reactions towards the subject matter (11.2%) and an efficient time management (11.2%). The most important categories related to lack of motivation were: (1) absences or excuses (20.2%); (2) low time on task (14%) and (3) negative reactions towards the subject matter (14%). Concerning origins of the lack of motivation, teachers emphasised: (1) the large differences between pupils (13.7%); the lack of sport culture of youth (10.5%) and (3) the negative pupils’ attitude towards school. The goals of the study were : (1) to determine if team sport players are able to recall verbal interventions provided by the coach during the match; (2) to analyze the characteristics of those that are well recalled. We followed one volleyball team and one basketball team during the 1998-1999 season. Both teams competed in the second Belgian division and belonged to the best clubs of the region of Liege. Athletes provide a particular attention to supersticious behaviours, specifically when approaching a competition. In this study, we worked with 16 athletes (track and field). During the month before one important competition, ten wrote in a diary their daily activities and thoughts. Moreover, during the 10 minutes preceeding the competition, 9 runners have been videotaped in the perspective to participate into a explicitation interview. L'évolution de la société occidentale (individualisme, recherche de profit, concurrence effrénée, effets de mode, etc) concerne directement les organisations sportives, dont les ressources humaines et financières tendent à se raréfier. Les bénévoles fuient les exigences des membres et les responsabilités de plus en plus contraignantes ainsi que le peu de valorisation dont se voit fratifier leur dévouement. Les budgets augmentent et les frais se multiplient tandis que l'aide publique se limite souvent à la portion congrue, incitant les responsables à rechercher la rentabilité.
