[more ▼] OBJECTIVE: To describe a surgical technique for resection of the entire bladder neck, including the trigone and proximal urethra in dogs with invasive tumors causing life-threatening urinary tract obstruction. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case reports. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=2) with bladder tumors. METHODS: Circumferential excision of the bladder neck and proximal urethra with preservation of the neurovascular pedicles was performed to remove a rhabdomyosarcoma (dog 1) and a transitional cell carcinoma (dog 2) involving the trigone and bladder neck that were causing urinary tract obstruction. Reconstruction of the bladder and proximal urethra included bilateral ureteroneocystostomy. Adjuvant chemotherapy was administered postoperatively to both dogs. RESULTS: Postoperatively, dogs 1 and 2 were continent after 7 and 17 days, respectively, and regained normal urinary function after resolution of a transient pollakiuria. Dog 1 had no evidence of local or regional recurrence; however, a large solitary pulmonary metastatic lesion was diagnosed 8 months later. The dog was euthanatized despite a lack of clinical signs. Dog 2 had at least 1 metastatic lesion in the abdominal wall 6 months later and was euthanatized at 580 days because of renal failure. CONCLUSION: En-bloc removal of the bladder neck and proximal urethra with preservation of the dorsal vascular and nervous pedicles, although a technically challenging procedure, can be performed without associated urinary incontinence or bladder wall necrosis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In dogs with invasive bladder tumors causing life-threatening urinary tract obstruction, resection of the bladder neck and proximal urethra should be considered as a promising surgical alternative to urinary diversion. [more ▼] Ultrasound has become more common in the investigation of the podotrochlear apparatus in the horse and the use of more sensible scanheads improved the quality of the images. This study shows six examples of the ultrasound anatomy of the distal podotrochlear apparatus in the transcuneal view performed with three different scanheads. The presented transcuneal scans of the podotrochlear apparatus of an 18 months old warmblood foal have been established post mortem on isolated feet. Modus of registration was real-timemotion, linear- and sectorscanheads working at 7.5 (linear) and 7.5 (microconvex) and 3.5 (convex) MHz were used. The echoanatomic structures of the soft tissue and bony surfaces in the distal podotrochlear region are compared by six images. The combination of the different scanheads permits an improved complete visualisation in this area. Therefore these ultrasound pictures show that ultrasonography is an useful complementary investigation method that enables to precise the diagnosis [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 50 (10 ULg) Differentiation of glycans in equine guttural pouches.; ; Busoni, Valeria et alin Veterinary Journal (2008) The aim of this study was to investigate the carbohydrate composition of mucosubstances in the equine guttural pouches using conventional histochemical tests in conjunction with glycolytic digestion to ... [more ▼] The aim of this study was to investigate the carbohydrate composition of mucosubstances in the equine guttural pouches using conventional histochemical tests in conjunction with glycolytic digestion to degrade different classes of glycosoaminoglycans. In the goblet cells, the mucopolysaccharides contained chondroitin sulfate B, heparin, heparan sulfate and sialic acid residues. The acinar cells also expressed these substances (except for heparin), whereas the ductal cells produced chondroitin sulfate B and sialic acid. Neutral sugars were also found in each cell type. The diversity of the glycocomponents found in the auditory tube suggests that they may have important functional roles. Indeed, the glycosoaminoglycans provide a hydrophilic environment that prevents dehydration and desiccation of the guttural membranes during air passage. Additionally, these glycomolecules may be involved in the pathogenesis of some bacterial disease in horses, such as equine strangles. [more ▼] Although ultrasonography is widely used in equine orthopedics, its use in the distal portion of the digit is still limited. The purpose of this descriptive study was to document the normal ultrasonographic appearance of the palmarodistal aspect of the digital area imaged between the bulbs of the heels. Ultrasonographic images were obtained with a 7.5 MHz microconvex transducer in 10 fresh equine cadaver forelimbs and five sound horses. Sagittal, parasagittal, and transverse images were obtained from the proximal aspect of the middle phalanx to the distal sesamoid bone. Anatomic sections were obtained from five cadaver specimens to correlate the sonographic appearance with the anatomic findings. The remaining cadaver limbs were dissected to confirm normalcy. Ultrasonographic examinations were possible on all digits but distal images were more difficult to obtain in digits with long heels. Bony structures (palmar surface of the middle phalanx and proximal border of the distal sesamoid bone) and soft tissue structures (deep digital flexor tendon, digital tendon sheath, proximal palmar recess of the distal interphalangeal joint, proximal recess of the podotrochlear bursa, collateral sesamoidean ligaments) identified on the anatomic slices were seen on the matched sonographic images. Ultrasonography provides good anatomic details of the palmarodistal aspect of the digit. The images of this study will serve as a reference for clinical studies on ultrasonography of the palmarodistal aspect of the digit.
