This study investigates the effect of interaction between hardness of grains and modality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) presentation on starch digestion in broiler chickens. A digestive trial (without starvation) was conducted (d 34 to d 38) with 108 chickens (Ross) divided in 36 groups. Two varieties of wheat were included at 60 % in diets: Deben (soft, hardness = 27) and Folio (hard, hardness = 82). The first modality of presentation (Fine) corresponded to finely milled wheat (hammer mill, sieve of 2 mm). The second (Coarse) was related to coarsely milled wheat (hammer mill, sieve of 5 mm). The third dietary treatment (Whole) corresponded to 10 % whole wheat between d 10 to d 17, 20 % from d 17 to d 24 and 30 % after d 24. Hardness (varieties), modalities of presentation and their interaction did not influence ingested starch (p > 0.05). Hardness interacted significantly (p < 0.05) with presentation of wheat on excreted starch and starch digestibility. But quantities of digested starch were not significantly different between the six treatments (p > 0.05). The starch digestibility of Folio-Fine was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than five other treatments. Moreover, starch digestibility of Whole was (p < 0.05) better than Coarse for Deben only. On the other hand, starch digestibility was not significantly different between Deben-Coarse and Folio-Coarse (p > 0.05). Similarly, starch digestibility of Deben-Whole was not significantly different than Folio-Whole (p > 0.05). In conclusion, fine milling (2 mm) of hard variety (Folio) was involved in reduction of starch digestibility. [less ▲]
