The purpose of this study was to try to assess the fitness of endurance horses by using a simple routine standardized treadmill exercise test performed before and after a training period. Seven endurance horses aged 7 to 13 years, unfamiliar with the treadmill conditions and competing in international championship were tested twice in an air-conditioned laboratory, i.e. before and after a 4-month training period. The test was preceded by a 20 min warm-7 period and consisted of 2 min walk and 2 min trot (4.2 m/sec) with a slope of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 The whole test lasted 45 min. Venous blood was sampled before and 4 min after each test. Heart rate was continuously recorded before, during and after the test with a cardiometer. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and body weight were measured before and after the test. The completion of the test induced a significant decrease of the body weight, a significant increase in packed cell volume, cortisol, white blood cells, proportion of granulocytes, lactate, free fat acids and iso-enzyme LDH 5, and no change in the ions and in the activity of the other enzymes. Training did not induce significant changes in blood parameters, except in hacked cell volume and cortisol. Training induced a significant decrease in heart rate at all exercise intensities and during recovery. It was concluded that the test proposed in this study is simple, safe, suitable for horses unfamiliar with the treadmill and applicable in a 1-day clinic routine examination. In these conditions, the most reliable parameter for the assessment of fitness in endurance horses seems to be the heart rate recorded during 2 standardized tests performed before and after a training period [less ▲]

An adult pony had a 1-month history of severe respiratory distress that was resistant to treatment and environmental changes. Results of blood gas analysis were indicative of alveolar hypoventilation. Simultaneous recordings of thoracic and abdominal wall motion by inductance plethysmography, together with complete pulmonary mechanics evaluation that included transdiaphragmatic pressure monitoring, revealed complete passive behavior of the diaphragm during breathing. Because radiography, necropsy, and histologic examination did not reveal any major lesion to explain the clinical and functional observations, bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis was diagnosed [less ▲]

The physiological peculiarities of the oxygen transport chain in double-muscled Blue Belgian cattle are described. The investigations performed at several levels of the oxygen transport chain suggest that the increased susceptibility of these cattle to stress, resulting mainly in respiratory diseases, is due to an insufficient functional reserve capacity mainly involving the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. The resulting lack of 'functional hardiness' of the oxygen transport chain is seen in those double-muscled cattle which do not react in an appropriate or predictable way when submitted to a hostile environment. The present experiments were designed Co challenge, without the bias of anaesthesia, the previously reported statement that intratracheal administration of Pasteurella haemolvtica does not impair haemodynamics in calves. Central venous, pulmonary arterial and capillary wedge and systemic arterial pressures were measured by fluid-filled catheters in 11 calves. Cardiac output was measured by the thermodilution technique, heart rate (HR) was derived from the ECG and stroke volume (SV), pulmonary and systemic vascular resistance were calculated. The haemodynamic values were measured hourly from the first to the tenth hour alter intratracheal inoculation of P. haemolytica. Cardiovascular response was marked and typically consisted of two hypotensive hypodynamic phases. The first, which occurred by the second hour after inoculation, consisted of a transient bradycardia and a systemic vasodilation leading to profound hypotension and reduced venous return. Cardiac performance then recovered, but systemic hypotension persisted and hypoxaemia developed. The second phase occurred by the seventh hour alter inoculation and was associated with a decline in SV, an increase in HR, and pulmonary hypertension. Three different degrees of cardiovascular dysfunctions were found, differing basically in the intensity of the first phase bradycardia and second phase reduction in SV and systemic arterial pressure, suggesting that experimental pneumonia produced by intratracheal instillation of P. haemolytica in calves results in distinct cardiovascular dysfunctions depending on the animal. Ignorance of the underlying haemodynamic status therefore precludes reliable interpretation of physiological as well as pharmacological results using this model of respiratory disease [less ▲]

This study was designed to test the applicability and the reproducibility of the thermodilution method in the measurement of right ventricular ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV) in unsedated cattle. In the 16 healthy calves studied, it was possible, using a fast response thermodilution catheter, to obtain characteristic exponential steplike washout curves, allowing the calculation of right ventricular EF, EDV and ESV. Five to 10 successive thermodilution curves were recorded within a few minutes and two to five similar sets of measurements were performed throughout the same day to test the reproducibility of the technique. The same protocol was repeated the following day. Right ventricular EF, EDV and ESV were reproducible successively, throughout a given day and on following days. The mean intraset, intraday and interdays coefficients of variation ranged from a mean of 4.0 (SD 4.1) per cent to a mean of 18.2 (SD 7.9) per cent. Values of right ventricular volumes and EF agreed with those previously reported in various animal species. Thermodilution was, therefore, shown to be a useful method for measuring with a satisfactory reproducibility, right ventricular EF, EDV and ESV in the unsedated healthy calf [less ▲]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) modifies respiratory function, specifically, hyperventilation, diffuse bronchoconstriction, and pulmonary arterial hypertension in cattle. We determined whether the IV response to 5-HT in calves was attributable to stimulation of 5-HT2 receptors. Six healthy unsedated young bull calves of the Friesian (n = 4) and of the Belgian White and Blue (n = 2) breeds were used. A specific 5-HT2 antagonist (metrenperone, 0.05 mg/kg of body weight) was administered IM 30 minutes before the cattle were given a 5-minute IV 5-HT infusion. Pulmonary function values were registered before, during, and after the 5-HT challenge infusion. Minute volume increased significantly, because of an increase in respiratory rate. Conversely, lung dynamic compliance, total pulmonary resistance, and pulmonary arterial pressure were not changed. We concluded that in cattle, 5-HT-induced ventilatory response is not mediated through activation of 5-HT2 receptors. However, the 5-HT2 receptors are involved in 5-HT-induced broncho- and pulmonary vasoconstriction. [less ▲]

This study derives normal values for electro- and vectorcardiographic parameters, as generated by the Holmes semi-orthogonal lead system, in healthy growing calves. Sixty-four electrocardiograms were recorded from healthy Friesian calves aged from one week to one year. Waveform and duration were analysed and compared in the X-, Y- and Z-leads. The modal P, QRS and T tridimensional vectors were graphically constructed and their magnitude and orientation were calculated. The duration of waves and intervals were similar to data previously reported in the bovine species. Differences from data reported in other species were attributed to heart rate. The duration of waves and QT and ST intervals significantly lengthened with the decrease in heart rate which occurred during growth. PR interval significantly lengthened with physical maturation, and this change was independent of the decrease in heart rate. The magnitude and the orientation of the spatial modal vectors were approximately similar to the few data previously reported in cattle and in other ungulates and were not affected by somatic growth [less ▲]
